Building a 406 need some info..

I was originally going to put together a 383 LT1 for my 4th gen which has all of the machining done and is ready for assembly but i have this 400 small block sitting in my shop and I may go down this road instead since I was planning on going carbed with the LT1 anyway.

for the 406 im planning on running eagle 4340 crank, 6inch H beams, Mahle pistons, 4 bolt conversion, etc.. heads are going to be 230cc Aluminum CNC Dart Pro 1s and a nasty custom grind HR cam, 12:1 compression, Super Vic single plane a holley 850 DP, My question is what numbers are guys producing with similiar set ups and what would you guys think this setup is capable of producing if properly done..

thanks,
-john

Unfortunatly you only gave us specs on your cam as "nasty custom grind." This isn't much help with aswering your question. I would need a little more info on this to help, but the 400 small block can easily produce 400+ hp at the crank, and with the right cam 500-600+ hp is not unheard of.

What is the main use for this motor? Is this gonna see any street use or just the strip? I myself run a 406 but now wish i had went a diffrent direction. Maybe think of going with a 377 destroke kit...there's some guys makeing awesome numbers with these things and they have a much smoother ower curve if done right.

i cant say to the cam specs becuease I dont have them yet, but they would be your average off the shelf mild grind.

The car is going to see more street time then the the strip but probably by not a whole lot, so streetability isnt a major issue I can live with it if im going to be getting the most out of it, but were figuring on a 7000 max RPM motor.

That still leaves about 200 different cam grinds for SBC

Re: Building a 406 need some info..

I built 406, pro-1 215cc heads, 5.7 rods, low compression 9.5, Edelbrock RPM intake, Demon 750 w/vac secondaries, comp mech. roller 242int/248exh p/n 12-771-8. excellant street motor. Dyno tested at 451hp.@ 5600rpm 480 ft-lb @ 4700rpm, it even runs great on 90 octane unleaded with no detonation. More power is definately possible with more compression. The engine idles nicely after warm up at 900rpm. The mechanical roller allows more aggresive lobes that actually make the cam idle better with a little more vacuum than the same spec cam in a hydraulic roller. Good luck with your project, 406's are torque monsters and can make excellant power over a broad rpm band.

Re: Building a 406 need some info..

600hp should be possible with 406 cubes, Dart 230's, 12.0:1, Super Vic, and if you want a Hyd. Roller I'd say a Comp Cams XR300HR...which is roughly 248/254 @.050" .562/.580 on a 110 lobe sep.

I suggest Solid roller like a XR292R...254/260 @ .050 .582/.588 on a 110.

The solid roller shows a powerband 1000rpm wider and the XE grind shouldnt be as brutal as a "Drag or Oval Track" cam would be out of the Comp Cams catalog.

Sounds fun! Goodluck!

Thumbs up Re: Building a 406 need some info..

AutoRoc seem's to be right on the money. Check out my 400 smallblock build in the predator thread and you will see what I mean. Look for 10 Seconds.
