blowing oil filters off?

so i got some exhaust thrown on the truck '72 406 and i took it straight to the garage for a nice carb tune etc. as soon as they get it in there, it starts pissing oil through my remote filter adaptor, so i told them just throw a regualr filter on the block instead of the duals on the fender.. but it rolls those seals over too he said, twice. why would my pump be making so much pressure all of a sudden?

Pressure relief valve in the pump is stuck closed.

I had a remote filter for a while. It was in the way all the time. I finally just installed a System One filter back on the block. I like to check the filter after every race weekend so a remote filter makes it easier to access. If you only do oil changes every 3000 miles, you don't need a remote filter.

so if the relief valve is stuck closed.. it will just build up pressure and eventually somethings gotta go type thing? thanks much. just replace the pump, or what would you do?

Re: blowing oil filters off?

From the sounds of it, that's the problem. I'd find out exactly what the problem is first before changing anything but the pump would be my first guess. The pump builds pressure. The relief valve in the pump dumps excess pressure but I don't know what the setting is at. I fire my car up when it's cold and can have 80 psi pressure without blowing the filter seal.

How long will it run before it blows the filter seal? Long enough to get a reading on a pressure gauge attached to the block?

Even if the filter was plugged it shouldn't blow the seal unless the bypass valve in the filter mount is plugged off. Some people will plug the bypass to force the oil through the filter all the time. The bypass is a pressure differential valve. When equal pressure is on both sides, it stays closed. When the filter gets plugged, pressure is higher on the inlet side than the outlet side and the bypass opens allowing oil to bypass the plugged filter.

Try a new filter.

im not sure how long it takes, this is just what the shop has told me. they said they would check the actual pressure in the morning, so i'll get them to do that. it was a wix filter.

my friends malibu did they same thing but his engine was a low clearance engine running 20w50 and was blowing the seals when he would crack the throttle when it was cold ...changed to a lighter oil no problems

just figured it out, towed it back from teh shop.. pulled the filter off myself, and the adaptor that the filter threads to was cracked in half, so it let the filter tilt some i guess.. easy fix. thanks much guys
