From Automatic to Standart
From Automatic to Standart
I'm thinking about switching my automatic tranny with a standart and just wanted to know what parts i need to do so i haven't bouhgt a tranny yet.
I'm still debating if i should gte a 4 or a 5 speed?
Would a 5 speed fit?
And where could i take a tranny out like could i take it out of other vehicles other then a camaro?
Really appreciate your help.

Re: From Automatic to Standart
try to find a 2nd gen f-body in the J/Y with a 4 speed, and grab everything you need, I don't know where you are located, but if you have to grab the trans from behind a pontiac/olds/buick motor, the flywheel and bellhousing will be different
Re: From Automatic to Standart
I converted an '80 Vette to standard tranny last year. The work required can be extensive, but the major parts are few:
-Standard tranny (obviously)
-Flywheel
-Brake and Clutch Assembly
-Clutch plate and pressure plate
-Crossmember or Crossmember Mount, depends on the car
-Bellhousing and Clutch Fork
-Drive Shaft (In some conversions, the manual shaft is longer)
-Gear Shifter Bracket and Gear Shifter
-Pilot Bearing for the backside of the crankshaft
-Throw-out Bearing for the clutch fork
-Z-Bar and Z-Bar pivoting ball that screws into the block
-Z-Bar Bracket for securing Z-Bar to chassis ( if not already there)
-All the necessary rods and springs the clutch pedal and Z-Bar
-Inner and Outer Shifter Boots

Re: From Automatic to Standart
The GM T5 is weak. thats why it was only put with the 305.
For your budget get a nice converter etc for your auto, if you're into drag racing.
