Air bags on a 1967 camaro.

I have a 1967 camaro SS. now. i saw a camaro today. looked amazing. it was black. and lowered. probabaly only 4 inches off the ground. sitting on low profile tires with 18" 5 spoke rims.

It looked amazing. and i wanna do that to my car now. but i wont want it that low all the time. so i was thinking about putting airbags on it. and putting the compresser in my truck. i know itll be a little extra weight. but not that bad.

What im curious is. will this affect racing a lot? in a bad way or a good way? and what kind of problems have people run into this before.

id lower it 4 inches. put the new tires and rims on. then get airbags to raise me up to normal ride height. probabaly a couple inches lower.

Well the problem with air bags is that they arent great for handling. To lower your car with them you let air out, which lowers the car, but the spring rate of the air bag also goes down, which hurts handling performance. When you want a higher spring rate from air bags to improve the handling, they raise you car, which raises your center of gravity, which is not good for handling either.....so your kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place with air bags.

Firestone is trying to devlope a kind of air bag that allows you to raise the spring rate and lower that car, but I haven't heard if its out or not, or how far along they are, thought it might be worth looking into.

Here is what I would do. First decide if your car is gonna be used to carve up corners, or rip of the strip?
If your answer was carving corners, or thats the place you would spent the most time with your car, then don't do the air bag setup, you'll be dissappointed.

If you want adjustable ride height and great cornering I would choose coilovers anyday. They may cost a bit more and require some custom work on the rear, though I dont know the expense of an airbag system, they will be worth the extra money and time. Koni, Bilstien, Carrera(my choice) and many other company's offer universal coil overs.

If may not be as easy as flicking a switch to lower your car, but I think that you will find screwing your coilovers down to the ride height you want and then being able to wind it around turns is well worth the effort.

I hope that helps.

Well for the strip, the air bags will work to a point depends on how fast your gonna go. I think that they wouldn't be to effective for a car trying to run faster than a 13. But I could be wrong.

I know that they are awesome on the street because their ride is amazing....and if that is what you are looking for then go for it, just dont expect handling to follow.
