Its a 1978 camaro, 350/th350, looks like bad piston rings it smokes bad when floored, the body is in good shape minor rust under the rear window.

Breaks, Tires, Tranny, are in good condition.

If everything else is in good shape, then it doesn't sound too bad. The rust at the base of the window is a common problem but I'm not sure what it costs to fix. Assuming the worst on the engine, are you ready to dive into a rebuild project or a new crate engine? Also if the paint is no good, that will be another big chunk of change. A couple things to consider

I suppose 850 sounds fair assuming the trans, brakes, and tires are as good as they say. Make sure to also check at the bottom of the doors near the frame rails for rust. Maybe check to see the condition of the front end (steering lube points, ball joints, etc) because if it needs work, that can add up too. Even if it needs ball joints or something, 850 is pretty cheap for a car with the pluses you mentioned. It might be a good idea to pull the tranny dipstick to see the fluid and get a smell of it.

On the plus side, rebuilding the old engine will give you a chance to pump it up a bit and have a strong running car.
