Question 78 Camaro 350

Hi, I was was just wondering how high a completely stock 78 camaro 350 should rev? Is it normal for it to only rev up to around 4000, and then start to miss and sound really bad? I know the timing is set right, and the plugs seem to look nice and brownish tan colored. Also it does have the stock 4 barrel rochester carb, and it idles perfectly, it just in the higher rpms...

Also, my dad has an old holley 650 carb lying around that i could use, but I was thinkin that might be to big of a carb for a stock 350, am i right?

And one more question, would a edelbrock victor jr. intake be a good choice for an aftermarket intake on a stock 350?

Thanks alot to anyone brave enough to answer all my questions

Re: 78 Camaro 350

Your engine when new would have been lucky to make it to 5500 before completely falling off. 28+ years of use have sapped the life out of your valvesprings and cam. The lifters probably look like birdbaths. The advance mechanism in your hei is likely very worn and possibly stuck.

Your QJet carb flows roughly 750 cfm and when working properly is the best all around carburetor for your stock or nearly so engine.

A Vic Jr. is not a good choice for your car's weight and powerband. Consider either an Edelbrock Performer RPM QJet manifold or a GMPP iron BowTie highrise QJet intake. Others will work but may require an adapter to work with the QJet.

As stated, but a little simpler, to answer your question; No it's not normal... the engine should spin higher, but something is holding you back.
That said, you wont need to get much higher with a stock engine. It think it's an ignition problem though... although it could be carb related.
