70's 350's
i sold the 400 outta my car for some $ and he also gave me a 70s 350 for put in it.how are theses motors?can they be built up any pretty ez?or r they just to slow to even want to build up?overall how are they?
Chevy 350's are more then decent engines... the pontiac ones suck.

How can you "wake it up"???
EASY!!!
Even with stock heads, you can add a high performance camshaft (the "brains" of the whole motor) and get a significant power improvement. Old 350 small blocks are a cheap engine to rebuild and to get parts for, so stuff like the cam and pistons, etc. aren't going to cost an arm and a leg.
A motor built in ~'75 is not going to be like one built in the late '60's --- emissions were suddenly becoming important, and high-horsepower engines went out the window. The pistons are almost guaranteed low compression, dished pistons. Get flat-top pistons at least, and if not, pop-ups are even better!
These will boost your compression ratio up significantly, and then if you have a good camshaft, you should have a good motor pretty cheap.
You can spend more money on stuff like aluminum heads, roller rockers, etc., and they will yeild you even more power. It all depends on how much you want to spend to make power.
But a 350 SBC is by no means a "slouch"!!!
(well, when built right!

anyone no how much it wood cost me to rebuild it?if i add performence parts to it it will mess **** up cost the motor is stock and looks like its a lil worn out.will my car sound tuff with this motor ifi put on some flowmaster?my car weighs around 3600lbs with driver.my aim name is StickyHydro318 hollor at me plz.
If pontiac 350's suck why is one in the PHR engine building contest? I think it's funny that people throw away a decent engine because of what they have heard from someone who knows a guy who dates a girl who had one that sucked. LOL The Pontiac 350 is the SAME block as the 400, 428, and 455!!! Hell take a Pontiac 350, bore it .125 and viola! you have a friggin 400!!!!
Sorry, had to step in there....I have a 350 that I swapped out for a 455 anybody want it?

From what I recall, a Pontiacs made in Canada got Chevy engines.
Pontiacs can make good power, but more expensive and harder to find hop up parts compared to SBC

Yeah, and since that Pontiac 350 is the same block as the bigger motors, it is probably a pretty heavy motor too.
Not badmouthing the Poncho motors, but it's much easier to find the performance parts and less expensive to get more power with a Chevy 350.

The Pontiac 350 isn't a bad motor and it can be made to run pretty well, but as has been mentioned it is heavy. The other big strike against it is all other things being equal, it's actually cheaper to build a 400. Pontiac 350 pistons, etc. are actually more expensive than the 400 pieces.
That's funny. The ONLY internal parts that are different are the pistons and rings. These are priced VERY comparably. Crank, Rods, bearings, cams, cam bearings, main caps, etc, etc, etc are identical to the 400.
The Shortblock I have is exactly that....only shortblock and rotating assembly. Crank, rods, and pistons still installed. I will throw in a cam and timing set. $150, plus shipping. I can ship via forward air for around $200 to a major airport near you!

All other things being equal, 350 pistons are typically more expensive. Intake manifold, cam, carb, whatever other upgrades you want to throw on cost the same, sure, but when you're done you have a 400 horse 400 and a 275 horse 350.
