70 TA w/400 pontiac / 6 spd???
70 TA w/400 pontiac / 6 spd???
I have a pontiac 400 in my 70 bird...i am very tired of the 400 AT @ freeway speeds...imagine dentist drill on high for long periods of time...i dont want to change gear ratios...3:08's...is there anyway to mount up a 6 speed or a 700r4 tranny? if so, how??? thanks for any info...
I know that 200-4r's can fit pontiac engines with little to no modification if you already have an automatic. You need a new shifter, and I think you can keep the driveshaft.......

teh 200 4r is about half an inch shorter at teh output that a th400. teh mounting length is almost exactly teh same, you may have to oval out the tranny mount hole in teh cross member slightly to get a perfect fit.
it will help you away from a stock with a slightly steeper first gear and on the highway with a 33% drop in rpm's when you hit 4th gear.
200 4r gears: 1st= 2.74, 2nd = 1.57, 3rd= 1.00, 4th = .67
they are most commonly found in g-bodies and full sizes wioth the optional oiverdrive tranny. if you see a olds 442 being parted out, that shoudl ahve the correct tranny for you.
also, look under chevy's too. some 200 4r's are supposed to have come wiht a dual bolt pattern bell housing, although i have never actually seen one.
if you wanna go with a 700r4, they have a real nice deep first gear that will really get you out of the hole, but the 1 to 2 shift kinda hurts with a 45% drop in rpms. the 700r4 also have less of an overdrive by a little, only a 30% when you go into 4th.
to find the correct bolt pattern just look under any wrecked 6cyl 3rd gen f-body. i know the thought of a V6 tranny scares soem people, but gm used teh same components as the V8 models, teh bell housing for the 2.8 and 3.1 motors is teh B-O-P pattern, so it woudl match up corrrectly. the 700 presents soem install issues since it is about 2inches longer at the output than a th400 and i believe the mounting length is far off too.
both can be built to handle big hp, so there is no worry there. to me the 200 4r seems liek a much easier install, and if you wanna beef it up just go to the turbo buick sites, those guys go fast on them.
hope this helps.
