68 ticking and leaking

68 ticking and leaking
My brother has a 68 RS w/ a 327, and today he had it out and while cruising at a constant speed it started clicking, and the ticking increases w/ the rpm's. And when you hick the gas real quick the carb starts to pop.
While looking for the ticking noise i noticed a oil leek coming from the back of the motor dripping off the transmission.
We took off the air cleaner and we could see a puff coming from the front right of the 4 barrel.
i was wondering what would cause all 3 of these problems at once? He has had the car 7 years and has never dripped a drop or made a noise ever.

NEW to the boards, hello :P
i have noticed this noice now also, but i thought it wasn't anything wrong [just got my lisence and camaro 1 month ago :P]
it makes a flikering sound, and it increases as i push the gas
also, there is a small leak of trans. oil
its a 68 base camaro 327 2 barrel carb with powerglide tranny

Re: 68 ticking and leaking
The ticking sounds like something wrong with a valve, and the smoke out of the carb makes me wanna say it's an intake valve. Check the side of the motor with the smoke puff. You can hold a screwdriver to your ear and touch it to the valve cover to find out approximately where the tick is coming from. I'm guessing cylinder 1 or 3 though. Easiest scenario, your rocker came loose. Worst scenario, you ate a valve guide and need to pull the head. I had some 1.94 heads on my 327 that sounded like a machine gun when the R's were high
The oil leak at the tranny is unrelated and probably the rear main seal. The 327 uses the ever-popular two-piece seal, which leaks like a foutain most of the time.

Re: 68 ticking and leaking
I had an old car do this once. Someone suggested it could be a lifter getting caught up in the lifter bore. They suggested I change the oil/filter and substitute one quart of motor oil for a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil (sold at most big auto parts stores). I did this and the problem went away and never came back.
If your engine has a PCV valve, replace it. Remove and clean your spark plugs (if needed).
I'd also check the intake manifold for leaks. Some times they blow out, or more to the point, suck in. This would cause an oil leak, vacuum leak, and subsequent carb issues.
