Post Is this '68 SS396 a good deal? Help ASAP!!!!!

Original, matching #, '68 SS 396 (325HP), TH400, 12 bolt rear, console shift, factory air, std bucket interior, blk vinyl top, original 14X6 Rallys. Cowl tag & motor #s/VIN match.

Appears totally unaltered, original body panels, one coat of paint (faded & scratched)over original, no rust, only minor dings & dents, vinyl top is off (no roof rust), all glass good, all moldings good, all there, runs & drives excellent.

Needs interior resto, body work (dent & dings)& paint.

$13K???

Sounds like a smokin deal to me. Check very closely for rust in the rear frame rails and wheel wells. Also look for ****ty rust repairs.

You might want to go to www.camaros.net and look at the cars for sale in the ads. You can get an idea of what similarly equipped cars have been going for. Mine had a non-matching 325hp 396 and a weakened TH350 (original 4-speed car) when I bought it for $2500. But that doesn't count, since I bought it back in 1981.

Hope that helps!

$13K sounds like a good deal as long as it's the original engine. Check it out real close since a lot of guys go through some serious effort to fake these cars. Can you get a good digital picture of the VIN stamping on the engine block and post it. That will allow us to take a look for you to see if it's a possible restamp. Assuming it's the original engine, that car should be worth $15-20K at least when it's done.

Heres a pic of the ID block on the engine. Doesn't look like its been milled and restamped. VIN matches car, engine code (MY) & date matches also. Any opinions are welcome.

Thanks ... Mark

Sounds like a good deal. I've sold quite a bit of 1st gen camaro's. Funny thing..I had a cab for a 69 camaro, excellent shape, no floor pans, no front end etc.. sold it for $1500.

If its original numbers matching, you could put some work into it and sell it for more.
Post pictures of this car. You'd be surprised at how many fakes can be caught w/pictures.

btw, post it on camaros.net , there are *ALOT* of hardcore 1st Gen dudes that can spot a fake from a mile away.

Stamping looks good. I'm not an expert like some of the guys over at www.camaros.net so post it there like he said. Car sounds like a decent deal. Be prepared to spend about $4-6K on it to make it look real good. You'll find things like the chrome looks bad after a fresh paint job and the interior will need help as well. Once you replace 1 piece with something new, the rest of the car will look old and faded.

Bought the car for $12K!!! I checked every casting & ID # I could find....block, intake, exhaust manifolds, carb, etc ... all matched. Original (no rust) floor & trunk pans too!

Picked it up on Friday and drove it 800+ miles home @ about a 70MPH avg...didn't miss a beat! Very happy :-)

Sounds like you got a great car!
I remember back when mine had a non-matching 396 in it. I noticed that you didn't mention what your average mpg was on that trip home. So what did you get? 20-22?

LOL !! Although now that I think about it, the MPG was pretty good. I think I filled the tank 3 times & I know theres gas still left in the tank so that would equate to about 14-18 MPG!?!?!????

Hey, that's not really bad mileage for a big-block. At least the gas stops gave other folks an opportunity to bug you... I mean to check out your car and ask questions about it. I bet it was a blast driving it on a trip like that. Post some more pics when you get a chance.

Take Care!

Why can't I find deals like these in California?

You got a heck of a deal in my opinion. (But the '68 SS396 is my unicorn.)

jg95z28 .... sorry to twist the knife but guess what? Its originally a California car & it still had the CA black plates when I bought it. Guess this one got away!

I'm very happy I found it first!

:lol That's ok. I'm actually happy for you. I am particularly looking for the convertible version. (There are still a few left.) I personally have seen one in unaltered original condition near me.

Just keep it stock and it'll be worth much more in the long run. (There are a lot of "clones" out there.)
