68 Camaro-- Dash lights went out!!!

They worked fine till the other night. All the gauges work just the back light stopped, the shifter light and HVAC lights went as well.

Fuses--replaced the burnt one with another 20 amp. As soon as I hit the hit switch, it blows.

Plug in for the back of the gauges cluster is good too.

You have a dead short! The factory fuse is nowhere near 20 amps. Maybe 5? Do you have any aftermarket gauges installed on the circuit that may have an exposed wire? Look for some overheated insulation too as a 20 amp short will turn the wire into a light bulb for a split second...

It did "light bulb" it for a second! No aftermarket gauges. It worked for ever then just quit the other day. The panel says 20 amp, this fuse is also used for the tail lights as well.

Really? Huh, my 69 has a short fuse for just the instrument lights. Have you thrown anything in the trunk that might have disturbed the wiring?

My gauge light is a short on as well. But I read on Camaros.org that the tail light was shared with the dash lights. Just before the fuse blew, the dash lights worked. The truck has a receiver light package wired in, but It looks like it has been there for a long time. Really do appreciate your help bro

I don't think taillights are shared with anything as not having them is dangerous and an instant ticket. You can take out your headlight switch to check out the resistor. You might put another fuse back in and dim the lights all the way down and see it it blows. Be on the lookout for smoke! To take out the switch you need to push in a little spring loaded button on the switch body while pulling out the ****/shaft. When the **** comes out you can use a wide flat bladed screwdriver to unscrew the bezel that holds it into the dash. I think if you dig under the dash you'll find something stupid that's causing it. Do you have the factory radio , or is there an aftermarket one that is hooked up to the light circuit?

Its factory AM radio, I'll try pulling the switch tomorrow. I had a short by the consel clock, it wasn't plug into the housing anymore and was arcing. I cut that to kill the circut connection to the clock but the damn fuse still blew. It's probbaly a bad switch....I hope
