Question 67 option question

I have a question for classic owners.
My dad asked me if in 1967 was the Z-28 a true Z-28, or was it an option package on an RS?
thank you for your time.

The Z28 was an option on a base V8 Camaro. The RS package (Z22) was also an option. You could order both together, but most Z28's were not RS cars in 67.

The Z28 was not a badge until 1969 wasn't a badge until 69 I believe, although it may have been an option on paper as "Z28" previously, that I don't know other than yes you could get it in the 302 config.

Actually '67 had no badges, just stripes.

1968 was the first year with the "Z/28" badge.

RPO Z22 (The "RS" or "rallysport") option was a trim option that could be had on any Camaro in 1967, from the std. "Plain Jane" with a straight-six or V8, to the SS, to the Z/28.

The only options that could not be combined were the SS and Z/28 options.

You also could not get a Z/28 with A/C or automatic in a first gen.

67 did not have Z28 badge, but did have 302 emblems
no a/c or auto was avail 67-69
no vynil tops
stripes could be deleted
spoilers were an option, as was the console, but all had power front disc brakes, and multileaf springs in back with a 12 bolt, and a 4-speed
RS was trim package avail on any model camaro, mainly was the hidden headlight grill, and backup lights under rear bumper, most had the wide chrome around the windows, but not all

Cool

Thanks for the numbers clarification. I must be thinking of some other rare option. Even 602 is a low number. They had to have at least, what, 500 ?? to be included as a production car to race it ?

Back in the day, Trans Am required I think 1000 cars to qualify, but they let them slide the first year, since the Z28 was a mid year introduction. They changed the rule in 1970 to include any V8 car in the numbers, that is why the 70 Z had a 350; the 302 wasn't needed anymore to meet the rules, they could just destroke it to the 305 ci limit.
Another trivia note, Pontiac has to pay the SCCA a fee for every Trans Am sold, to this day. SCCA has the rights to the Trans Am name, and basically gets a royality for the use of the name.

Correct. To compete in Trans-Am which had a maximum displacement rule of 305 ci, Chevy created the 302 buy putting a 283 crank in a 327, displacing effectively 302 ci.

It was option RPO Z28, hence the name.
