'67 Carb Float..

dad has a '67 Camaro RS.. 327ci

the float has been getting stuck, within the past month or so... my dad tried adjusting it, but it still gets stuck, and the engine practically floods, constantly.

is this common for such an old car? what could be the problem, and how easy is the fix?

Original 2bbl or 4bbl Rochester? Or is it an aftermarket 4bbl Holley? If its a Holley, they're notorious for that.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say it's the original.... most of the stuff on the car is.. but, I'm pretty sure it's a 4bbl

Then its probably time for a rebuild kit (or to have it rebuilt if you don't know how). The 2-bbl Rochester on my 67 RS is giving me all kinds of trouble as well. However since it isn't a daily driver, I'm nursing it along until I have time to install the 4-bbl intake and carb I bought to swap in. If your dad's is a 2-bbl as well, that's something you might want to consider, as the 4-bbl Rochester Quadrajet will actually get you better mileage cruising around town, and a little more umph from the throttle when you need it. However, if you want to keep it all original, then stick with the 2-bbl. If its already a 4-bbl Quadrajet, then just rebuild it.

If you can find some numbers off the carb, I can tell you exactly what you have. Look for a round disc on the driver's side with a set of numbers starting with "70". If the disc isn't there, then its probably already a replacement. Most local auto parts store will carry a replacement. A rebuilt OEM spec Quadrajet for a 67 Camaro will set you back between $200-300. A rebuild kit is about $50-100.

If you have the 2-bbl and decide to go with the swap, you can easily find a #'s matching correct intake on ebay for less than $80. An original "correct" carb will run you a little more though, $300-400 in some cases. I got lucky and found both packaged together for $240, shipped. Edelbrock makes an excellent replacement intake and carb that will set you back about $600. I've also used the Edelbrock intake with a parts store rebuilt Q-jet in the past on a daily driver 68 RS with excellent results.

Keep us posted.

Sounds like the float is playing "submarine commender" on you. Older floats can get fuel-logged and stop, well,............ FLOATING so good any more. Buy a replacement and put it in- for whatever carb you are using.
