I have a 1969 Camaro with a 454 BB, can't seem to figure out why it keeps overheating only when driving around. The car starts to get hotter and hotter as you drive around, takes about 20mins of driving for the car to over heat.

water pump is new(Napa stock pump)

using 50/50 with water wetter

is it possible I might have to cut away 2.5"inches on each side so more of the radiator is exposed? the stock radiator is allot smaller so the hole isn't as big.

any suggestions would help,

I run a ZZ502 BBC crate motor in a 67 with the Be Cool radiator, dual electric fans, Edelbrock water pump, and a 160 stat. I also use 50/50 mix with Royal Purple Ice. I bolted it in stock location with no mods and it runs 175 degrees in bumper to bumper traffic. Mine ran hot when the temp switch was set to turn on at 195, but then I put in a 175 switch and runs cool all the time.

Have you heated the thermostat to see if it actually opens? I had a brand new thermostat that did not open. I put it in a pot of water on the stove to test it.

 

I have tested the thermostat and it is working correctly.

I am going to replace the radiator cap to see if that will fix it.

 

lower the fluid level and look to see if the water is flowing through the cores and you have good circulation. also check your timing and fuel, if its out to lunch you will cook it.

 

I had the same problem after having my Camaro worked on at a small shop. I dealt with the overheating for a while and replaced everything I could relate to the heat problem. Oven day I was showing my friend how to use a timing light and found my timing to be way advanced. As soon as I brought it back into range it ran cool as ever.
