454 chevy block question

can a 454 chevy engine bolt up to the same motor mounts as the 350, 327, 305 etc.??

and can the same transmission from the 350 bolt up to the 454??

the reason I ask is I always thought the 454 was a big block but a buddy said that it can bolt to where a small block is (same motot mounts) so if that is true than the 454 would be a small block,,, no??

Re: 454 chevy block question

454 is a big block and yes it will bolt to the same motor mounts and tranny as a small block.

Re: 454 chevy block question

The big block has longer bore spacing. Center to center distance between the cylinders is greater. That's what distinguishes between a big block and a small block. There are some engines like Oldsmobile that have the same bore spacing from a 350 to a 455 so they have no big and small blocks. Bore and stroke size is only changed.

The chev V8 engine mount location is the same distance from the bellhousing on both big and small blocks. BBC and SBC share the same bellhousing bolt pattern but don't share the same flywheel/flexplates. Because the engine is longer and the tranny position doesn't change, the extra engine weight will be slightly ahead compared to a SBC.

The trans will bolt to the engine. The only difference is that with small block frame mounts, the engine will sit a little higher in the engine bay - usually not a problem. Just watch your fan shroud, as the fan will be higher.

Re: 454 chevy block question

I didn't know this. I always thought the motor mounts had to be changed when going BBC from a SBC car. Nice!

One thing GM did that was good. Interchangablility.

Ordered a painelss wiring kit for a 1994 Ford Mustand and all references in the directions were for a gm. Painelss told us that it was because GM has not changed color codes since 1957.

Re: 454 chevy block question

I put a 454 in my 73 Camaro. Had a 350 in there previously.

Used the SBC PS stuff (just put it on a set of BBC brackets), the SBC radiator/fan shroud/fan, suspension (unless you wanna change it). You'll need new exhaust, new p[lug wires for a BBC, and to prolly do some work on the temp sensor location, the hoses, and figure out hood clearance.

What vehicle are you looking to swap ??
