I like a 373 for all around gear....I think it depends. I have a 410 in my 68, but that's a light to light car...not a highway crusier....

I agree with the 3.73, this would allow you to cruise at 2200 or so at 70 MPH with a 28 inch tire.

if you plan on a lot of highway, you might want to run a 3.42, which would run about 2000 at 70, again with a 28 inch tire

either way, with the 454 and the deep first gear of the 700R4 you will have plenty of grunt off the line.

this is assuming that you are building a mild 454 and are lookign for driveability, if you are building a spastic motor, and are looking for max drag performance or somethign else specificly, It might change things.

also If you are in the rear end then do a posi if it doesnt already have one.

I have a 400 pontiac which is pretty torquey but am installing a 6.71 rat motor in next year or so.Because of that I went with 3.42 gears with a 27 inch tire..firehawk Indy 255/60/15 they have some shorter ones too same size but I guess different sidewall construction or something.I also went with a mellow 2400 b and m nitrous stall. The combo seems to work nice for daily driving and the highway and I notice very little if any slip.
I have no trouble incinerating street tires even now with only 300 or so engine hp. I was going to go up to 3.73 but really the rat don't need gears that steep. But you do have an overdrive so you could easily do 4.10 or 3.73 if you wanted to.I have a turbo 400 so not near as much first gear either.
