400 sbc build up?
400 sbc build up?
I have a 67 camaro with a stock 400 small block except for headers and a edelbrock victor jr. intake and a 670 street avenger carb., i like the motor but i belive it is burning a little oil so i want to rebuild it before i paint the car.
I would like to keep it under 1k i was think about boring it out about 0.20 and have to buy a rebuild kit, I would like to have a bigger cam to make it sound mean any suggestions? I will also get new lifters and wanting to get roller rockers. I would like to have MSD distributor and spark plug wires, i was thinking about the MSD street distributor. I have heard about porting out heads but i dont know how to do it but are they any other things i could do to bump the power. (Please give me suggestions on products of distributors and rockers and cam or if i should change carb or intake)
I have a small torque converter because the engine that was in it had a big cam and they told me if i didnt put it in it that when i stoped the car would die. When i slam on the accelerator down it has like a stall before it take off its in the motor not the trans. Like its starving for gas or fluiding it.
Thanks

if your budget is 1000 dollars heres what i would suggest:
check some swap meets. youll find some awsome deals on parts which will give you more horse power. buy a cheap engine rebuild kit from summit and just hone the cylinders if your blocks in good shape. as for a cam, check out comp high and extreme energy cams. youll find something that fits your application.if you still have a points style ignition, upgrading to a msd unit would be a great idea, if u already have an hei style distributor maybe just a rebuild kit for about 70 dollars would be more budget friendly.your heads as you know are your bottle neck. upgrading the heads would defintly made a huge improvement but it may not be so cheap. what power lever are you shooting for? usually the stock heads are good for about 310-330 horse or so. your intake will be fine for racing but if the cars a cruiser, you might be more happy with a dual plane design. the edelbrock air gap worked great on my old car but any duel plane will do the job. check around swap meets, youll score them for 50 bucks or less.what stall does your car currently have? for this combo i would reccoment about a 2200-2500. it will work great with the cam. my only other suggestion is make sure you have gears. your not gonna go anywhere without gears. a good 373 for an auto or 411 for a manual will realy get you out of the hole.
good luck on the build and p.m me if you have any other questions.

how much horse power are you trying to acheive? one thing I would definatley do first is get rid of the stock rods. they are the worst thing in a 400 sbc. go with a set of 5.7 rods. you will also have to change the pistons to match the new rod length. depending on how much HP you want. that might be okay for the bottom end. but like sn8ke eatr said the heads are where the power is at. matching a good set of heads with the right cam combination is what you should focus on.
