Question 3rd gen rear end in 1st gen

i just picked up a 67 camaro RS and the rear end is not original and it is not posi i think it came out of a truck

i am wondering if i can install a 89 posi disc rear end in my 67 camaro

does anyone know if this will work and if so what mods are necessary and if not why not?

thanks!!!

you would have to convert one or the other a 3rd gen uses lcas, coil springs, pan hard bar, and a torque arm were a a 1st gen uses leaf springs you also might have clearance issues with wheels and tires if the 3rd gen rear end is narrower ......it would be easier to buy a posi unti and gear of choice for you stock rear end and get a rear disck set up from a 93-02 car buy the brackets needed from the dealer to install them

Plus the 7.5" rear in the 3rd and 4th gen f-bodies is very weak.

The exception to that being the Australian 7.75" 9-bolt Borg-Warner diff that the L98 cars got from 1987-89 (with 1989 being the only year for the 9-bolt/PBR caliper rear disc setup). The 9-bolt is one tough cookie. But as the 2nd post mentioned, there is no advantage to using the 3rd gen diff in your 1st gen. I'd simply put in a posi unit and add rear discs to what you already have.

Or, you could just cut off all the 3rd gen brackets, and weld on a couple spring perches, at the same angle and width as the 1st gen. If all you are doing is street driving, and don't plan on putting on sticky tires, then the 7.5 will hold up fine. Plenty of 4th gens are abusing them with sticky tires.

You need to verify the width, although you have some leeway with wheel backspacing, and make sure you are getting a good rear for a good price.

If the price is right, then you end up with disc brakes and a posi..

I measured a 3rd gen rear and a 68 10 bolt.. the 3rd gen rear is approx, .75" - 1" wider.

Thumbs up

thanks for posting input

i plan to cut off the 3rd gen mounting brackets and weld on 1st gen perches

i have located a 10 bolt drum rear end but am considering locating a 9 bolt disc brake rear before modding the 10 bolt

another question i have is:

can drum rear end 3rd gens be changed over to disc brakes with stock disc brake parts?

if it can be done is it a simple bolt on procedure? or heavy mods?

again the rear end in my 67 is not a f body rear end i think it came out of a truck and the perches are not in proper location

i just cant see spending 700-1200 for a 12 bolt drum posi rear end when 3rd gen disc brake posi rears are abundantly available for around $100.

another question is will 4th gen rear ends work in 1st gens?

thanks for following thread and any input is appreciated

brooommmbroommmmm!!!

How much for 12 bolts? You need to take a trip to the midwest for some cheap parts.

I got a fresh 8.5" 10 bolt w/ posi and disk breaks for my 70 for $250. Do some shopping around, there are cheap deals on better rears than the 7.5" and you don't have to worry about all the rewelding. Not to mention the extra width.

heres another idea i was talkin with someone yesterday about getting a ford 9 in rear member and welding in the 10 bolt axel tubes in to the 9 in and use the 10 bolt axels and then all your brackets will be where they need to be
