383 stroker and problems

What are some good companies that make 383 stroker kits for a pre 87 SBC? I'm looking for something very strong that can handel about 400 - 500 hp plus a 200 shot of n2o. I'll probably need forged pistons, a 4340 crank and rods, and some good rings. Thanks for the help.

Also, what are some problems people seem to run into when building 383's? I've heard a lot of horror stories and a lot of good ones.

I don't know what company to say for the stroker kit.........Lunati maybe? I know that the 383 I had in my '81 used a GM crank out of a 400 that had the mains cut down to fit into the 350 block, so it wasn't aftermarket. Also, it just used stock GM 5.7" rods and a set of regular (cast) flat-top pistons. The heads were also "cheapie" *882* cast iron heads (~76cc chambers, 1.94/1.5 valves). The intake was a Weiand Stealth with a Quadra-Jet carb.

While I maybe didn't have "the best of the best" parts in my engine, it worked damn well (well, except when I went to the track ). For some reason at the track, the car decided to have a fuel delivery problem, so the car only ran a best of 14.2 @ 97 mph, but I KNOW it was capable of low 13's / high 12's with that motor.

If you plan on putting good forged parts into your engine, it should be more than capable of handling 400 - 500 HP, plus N2O.

IMO, "strokers" are the way to go, and I have missed that 383 ever since I sold it. One day I plan to stroke my LS1 to ~383 cubes just to get that combo back again. For a street / strip car, there is nothing better IMO.

(this one is in my home town, nice place with professional sales people - of course, your experience may vary).

Good luck!

If I go with forged pistons, a 4340 rods, 4340 crank, and balance everything, should I be ok reving the engine to about 6500 rpm. It's going to be a weekend racer and drivin a couple of times during the week. It will make about 450 hp with 10:1 compression and have a 200 shot of n2o on top of that.

Forged internals? Yeah, you're good to at least 6500 rpm. My non-forged 383 would spin to that. Would it last forever like that?............who knows, but forged you're definitely okay.
