289 build up?
289 build up?
I have a buddy with a 1969 mustang 289.The motor is origional with 200k on it.He wants some power so I toled him I could build the motor for him. What should I do he wants to keep the 289 block; I toled him to ditch it and go 351 but he want to keep the origional motor. What would be a good bang for your buck build on the 289.thanks
You can stick an old style 302 crank in a 289 block to make it a 302. Newer 5.0 cranks won't work since they take the one piece seal. It used to be the hot tip to run 4bbl 351w heads on 289/302s since they had bigger ports/valves. Still remember the casting numbers for the 69-70 "goodie" heads (for small chambers) by heart from many years of keeping an eye peeled for them while junkyard hunting. D0OE & C9OE.
No I'm not a former F@#D guy, I used to get them for cheap cause the junkyard owner wouldn't know they were different from any other SBF head, then sell them to F@#D guys I knew for $. These days, aftermarket heads blow the old factory stuff away.
You can also use 351C heads on a 302 with a lot of adaption to make a home brew Boss 302.
Oh yeah, use 302 rods/pistons with the 302 crank not 289 stuff.

Ya I think I got the year wrong. But thanks angle I think I am going to make it a 302 with 351 ported heads with a 4 bbl. What would be a good cam to go with this set up without having to run a stall. Thanks
