1981 turbo trans am smog pump question
1981 turbo trans am smog pump question
my dad has a 1981 turbo trans am (301) and the mechanic wants to get rid of the smog pump i know it will clean up the under side of the hood and a little weight but how much horsepower will u gain if any at all
Re: 1981 turbo trans am smog pump question
When I disconnect my power steering pump at the track it's worth ~ 1/10 in the 1/4. So figure ~ 10 hp. Even if a smog pump is only half that, plus the weight savings, it's worth it. The way you chop 4 tenths off your time can be with a big change like spending a grand on aluminum heads, or a bunch of little improvements added up.
I finally scored a manual Camaro steering box, complete with arm, for 35 bucks. Now all I have to do is find a matching drag link and I can dump the power steering permanently.

You won't feel it in the seat of your pants but it's worth it just to clean up some of the mass of hoses under the hood. Looks better and you get better access to work on other stuff under the hood.

yea we took the whole motor apart new rings, bearings, turbo rebuild, cam, etc. so the smog pump is gonna go.... and btw i believe the stock turbo 301 cars to b like 210 225 hp oooweee

I've droped to a 14.8 @ 93mph with a 2.4 60' time, 3 psi boost on launch and having to count to 2 before going WOT so I don't roast the tires...Nope They are just CarbedHotAirSlugs

With a MSD 6BTM, alky kit, cold air kit and some DR's the car can drop 2.5 off it's ET easy..That's the point I was making...1983 Regal T Type 16.95 79.96 9.2 Popular Hot Rodding 4/83

Re: 1981 turbo trans am smog pump question
Did you know that the 301T in the turbo TA was #1 on Hot Rod Magazines top ten *worst* V8 engines ever built?
My cousin had one, it was dismally slow. 17.00 in the 1/4 sounds about right. It couldnt even keep up with my quad 4 Cutlass at the time. When Hot Rod published their list, he sold the car in disgust.
The 301T is a waste of time and money. You are far better off pulling it and replacing it with a larger displacement Pontiac motor. The heads sucked, they had poor oiling and were notoriouse for spinning bearings if you reved them too high.

yes yes i know the car is a slug which is probably the reason why i myself have a 93 z28 m6 with a 383 going in this winter. my dad jsut thought the 301t would be a neat car to just cruise around in. ive seen the performance numbers dissapointing but basically just a fri nite cruiser type of car
