A prospective z buyer. I have a couple of restored older corvettes and I am now looking to buy a 1969 z.I am looking at a car for sale near me but I am not sure what is supposed to be on the vin pad. Any help or refrence book info would be appreciated

The engine code stamping should be DZ. The whole code will include the date as well. It should read something like V0217DZ which would mean V - Flint engine plant for small blocks, 02 - February, 17 - 17th day, DZ - 302/290hp engine. Depending on the build date of the car(check the trim tag for the build date) the partial VIN could be on the top deck pad if the car is a late 68 built 69. After Dec-Jan they stamped the partial VIN down by the oil filter area. It's really hard to read down by the oil filter. If it's a later car, it should have the X33 or X77 on the trim tag denoting the Z28.

The partial number by the oil filter should match the VIN of the car. It is stamped on the block right by the oil filter.

If the VIN of the car is 12479N123456 then you should find the partial VIN 19N123456 stamped on the the pad where the V1104DZ is on the passenger side in front of the head on cars built before Jan 69, or that partial VIN should be down near the oil filter on the vertical area stamped into the rough casting. It's really hard to read down there. Ask the owner to show you the numbers matching partial VIN and if he starts making excuses and won't help you, then you can probably assume it's not the original engine.

Not really. GM didn't keep records of combinations like that. The best you can do is take the total number of Z28's and multiply that time the percentage of cars that were Daytona Yellow. Then multiply that times the percentage of cars that had the yellow houndstooth. I don't think the actual number of cars with options like that will really affect the value too much. It's a nice combination in my opinion, but it might not be to other people.

No,the car is near Cleveland,Ohio. It is a project that looks to have a great body,decent interior,but needs paint and put back together

 

I think it's a pretty sweet combination. I found a couple for sale on the web today. I guess you either love it or hate it. There's no hiding from that yellow so you better love it.
