Why are all the current HUs ugly?

Why are all the current HUs ugly?
I am not 15 any more and I dont want something as HU that looks like a boom box. Now flame away
If I could choose I would prefer the stock radio shell with high quality innards. It isnt really pretty but better than all these aftermarket HUs.
Plus all the mounting kits I have seen protrude from the dash. Are there any mounting kits, that at least make it possible to have the front of the radio flush with the dash?

The reason they protrude is because of a small bracket in the back on the radio bay for the stock HU, without remocing that bracket you can not Flush mount a radio due to it's depth. I belive someone makes a fluch mtg bracket for the cars, but I'm not 100% sure.. I fabbed my own one out of a pieve of 1/8" aluminum I had laying in the shop. Works great for me..
And yes there are a lot of crazy HU's out there. But I myself am an Alpine and Eclipse fan.. those 2 have a fair amount of variey and not all are the "Flashy" HU's you're talking about.

I agree, ive noticed that sony has a tendency to over do their head units. Personally, Ive always liked how kenwood designed their units, not too flashy and also good quality. To flush mount my headunit, I used a ford kit and made my own mounting brackets. I also had to loose the vents that come out of the side of the console for clearance, I guess you wouldnt have that problem with a 4th gen though.

Its very easy to go flush. Heres a pic of the GM Multi kit in my car. I personally dont like the the Firebird/Camaro kit, cause the radio sits back in the kit, and it leaves a nasty 1/4" or so gap around the radio.

I am really picky about how a HU looks. I find most of them to be just plain ugly. The Alpine units are pretty clean but are a bit too "busy" in my opinion. The one I'm really thinking about going with the that Pioneer DEH-P9400MP, I think it's clean and has alot of nice features. The graphics are cool, but not overly annoying.

The 9400 is a pimptastic unit. It does everything..as far as car audio goes.
I wish we still carried it. The 9300 didnt sell all that well (at full retail) so we didnt even bother with the 9400 this year.

Those looking into the 9400mp should check out the Premier version ( 940mp ) Nearly the same price, but the pre-amp voltage bumps up to 6V. I don't mind the flashy pictures and such. On most head units, you can turn them off and just have CD info displayed. If you want a high quality unit that's plain jane looking..... look into the Nak units.

I have a Pioneer DEH-P7400MP in my car, I like the design and features, as far as flusj mounting goes, I used a Metra kit. But I didn't like how it looked, so I cverd all the black area with some aluminum, it looks really clean and sharp, I'll post pics soon.
