What sort of 12" sub should I use in my subthump box?
What sort of 12" sub should I use in my subthump box?
I'm going to use the subthump 12" driver's side enclosure. http://www.subthump.com/acamarostealth.htm
I need to select a sub now. My amp is a JL Audio 300x4. Front two channels will run my componets, back two the sub. I want to run a dual voice coil sub so that I won't have to rig the amp to run at 2 ohms(cleaner signal at 4 ohms).
In my ignorance I went out a bought an Eclpise SW6123DVC 12" dual voice coil sub because it was on sale. It says the ideal box volume is 1.65 cu. ft. Will it sound decent in this box, or should I sell it and buy something else?

well there's only one way to find out how well it will sound, but if you were to get rid of it and get a more worthy sub...
get this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
It fits well, and subthump recommends it for that box. The enclosure space is .7
EDIT: btw, that's a bada$$ amp.

I think I'm going to get a 10" sub now. I know it won't be quite as deep, but it does have a little more midbass than what you get with a 12". I talked to the guy at subthump and he said basically any sub that is designed to work in a small enclosure will work. He said the main spec to watch for would be the air space required. He also said to stay away from JL Audio because they tend to be misleading with their airspace specs(actually need more airspace than what they say on the spec sheet.)
That Infinity is looking real tempting at $119 though.

look around.
Oh yeah and JBL's good. but not as good as JL Audio.

JL's will work in much less airspace than is recommended, as will any brand. There is no perfect airspace for a subwoofer. The number that they give you is the balance between the low notes that the subwoofer will produce and the power it will handle. If you use a bigger box than is recommended, you will hit lower notes but handle much less power. The opposite is true if you use a smaller box, your sub will handle more power but start missing the really low notes.
As a for instance, my brother has 4 JL w3v2's, each recommended to handle RMS 300, with the "red" area being around 500. The recommended airspace is 1.2cu for a sealed box. The box we used has .9cu for each woofer, but due to the smaller box the subs easily handle the 550 each. The sacrifice is a volume dropoff below 30 hz. (Not that you hear lower than 30 very often anyways :P)
If you don't believe me about the subwoofers, compare a normal subwoofer to a Kicker SquareGarbage speaker. The kickers all say they handle 1000's of watts, but are recommended for a very small (.7 or smaller) enclosure.
And no matter what the haters say, JL's are the best bang for your buck period. You can't even get CLOSE to the sound quality and volume of a JL without spending 20-30% more. Go into any shop and ask them what they have that will compare in both price AND quality to a JL. The answer is always nothing. JL's all the way baby.
EDIT: and as another addition to this already lengthy post, the reason independent shops always talk trash about JL audio is because they have an authorized dealer network. There are only 3 authorized dealers in my area that can sell JL audios. Also, NO internet stores are authorized JL dealers. No authorization = no factory warranty, which also means that you will be buying rebuilt speakers as opposed to brand new.

The W7 being a prime example, $600 subwoofer; Adire's Brahma runs ~$350 and personally sounds better, and plays louder (All depending on the install of course). There is better equipment than JL out there, it's just not your main-stream equipment, it's the smaller companies that produce better products at lower prices.
Re: What sort of 12" sub should I use in my subthump box?
While I'm sure the W7 has been defeated again and again (due to it being a flagship-type product) I was more referring to the lower end speakers. What would hold up against w0's or w3's for instance. I looked in all the local shops, and hit the internet too, but there were no replacements for these two speakers.
Re: What sort of 12" sub should I use in my subthump box?
There's your problem as well, local shops. Many of the better speakers/subwoofers that are out there are not carried at most main-stream shops, nor even a lot of the hole-in-the-wall places; the product just doesn't sell like MTX, Kicker, JL, RF, Etc with the brand reconization that these have.
The speaker I suggested I've heard many times in this exact enclosure and it performs AWESOMELY, and doesn't cost as much as the JL either. There are a few smaller companies out there that make amazing products that just are not mainstream; mainly due to being a small business and not having the $$ to spend millions of dollars on advertzing and not being in a lot of the shops.
I'm sure the Adire Shiva, or ED K-series sub would both perform just as well if not better (I like the sound of the Shiva over either the W0/W3 personally) than the JL in that enclosure; depending on the amplifier of course as well.

Re: What sort of 12" sub should I use in my subthump box?
I would personally recommend a JL 10W3V2-D2. I've found them brand new on eBay for around 120$.
My second choice would be an Image Dynamics ID10V3. Great subs, and very cheap.
On a side note, I've never heard anything better than my two JL 8W7's. Rediculous SPL, and amazing SQ. My friend with a 12" Brahma was extremely impressed, as was I by his sub.
