What kind of subs are these?????

My neighbor gave me his sons old box and amp. The amp is a phoneix gold and I just opened the box and saw that the subs said BOSTON 12.4LF. Does that mean Boston Acoustics? I took some pics b/c the subs look old, does anyone recognize these and if so how good are they. I hooked them up in my house and they sound decent but how would they compare to a new speaker say Orion XTR's.

It completely depends on how you define "Better". Those boston subs were some of the best sounding subs available back when they were new. I would say that they sound as good as almost anything currently available too. With the 10" subs they had all kinds of problems with them blowing. It seemed like less of a problem with the 12s, but overall I don't think that they are anywhere near as hearty as the XTRs.

So... if all you want to do is play bass so loud that your spleen fails, then yeah, the XTRs are better. If you actually want your bass drum to sound like a drum and not a monkey banging on a pan, then those Bostons are much better than the XTRs.

What kind of box were they in though? Those subs are going to sound best in a sealed enclosure of around 1.5 cubic feet per sub.

personally untill i got into some of the "super subs" i thought the BA Pro was the best sounding subs i had heard. Sure it doesn't compete with the Big boys, but in a good install it would do better than most subs out there even tho it is a bit older. I would put it in the league of a lot of other mid range subs in sound quality... Shiva, Infinity Perfect, W6,... etc. Maybe not in SPL potential, but in sound quality i still think it is very respectable.
