Two 12s or One 15

Okay guys im not to bright when it comes to things like this. So bear with me. I have two 10s (cheapy fosgates). Im wanting to upgrade this now and i was wondering what would hit harder? Two 12s or one 15? Consider spending about the same amount coin on this. Hmm about 900 bucks or so. If I get a 15 would it sound okay when i listen to my metal music? Or a 15 is only good for low bass?

you want a hard hit the 15 is it.... however if you listen to metal the 15 has a terrible response time compared to two 12s. The 12s respond faster and will make better sounding bass, 2 of the right speaker will probably hit harder than a single 15 also...

yeah for metal id go with the 12's or maybe even better 10's......the smaller the sub is better for metal...cause the response is faster.

15s are better suited for rap and hip hop types of music. Two 12s or three 10s would sound way better

It's all in the box my friend. Way to many variables to say. Maybe a single sealed 15" would give you better frequency response the a pair of ported 12"s? Who knows. It's all up to your box making skills. That being said, you plan on making the box? Or buy one? Have one picked out already? And $900 for JUST the subs? Or is that for the amps and box as well? Already have the amp(s)? With that kind of budget we can easily work out something bada$$. Let us know.

Personally I would go for the 2 12's. You will get a better frequency response and a cleaner sound. If your looking for a HARD hit then by all means go for the 15, but if you get 2 good 12's, you will be very pleased

And what makes them respond faster?

I hear some people talk about smaller subs responding faster but it seems like something that should be put on the TV Show "Myth Busters!"

I'd take 2 12's over 2 10's (same model and type lets say) any day of the week if you could give them a big enough box. The size of subs, IMHO, comes down to 2 major factors (beyond choosing the actual sub)

1. Can you physically fit the sub where you want it?

2. Can you give the sub enough volume box size wise. (or if you go free-air/IB then mostly #1 applies)

There's also choosing the sub like I spoke of above but the speed of the sub can be looked at by the specs of the woofer if you know how to read them. Most of the time though if you get a pretty good quality sub (like Rockfords, JL's, Kicker etc...) you'll probably get some pretty good subs and not have to worry too much about their speed)

Just like when you change the gearing of your car it affects the top speed etc... You run bigger speakers and you have to factor in that they are going to take up more room.

The biggest downside to running 15's (generally speaking) is that you need more airspace for the sub and they can be a bear to mount since they are pretty big.

When it comes to the sound quality of a sub, it's not only the size that plays a factor there but the sub you choose is also part of the equation.

HTH!

Ted

What type of 12's or 15 are you thinking of running?

thanks Ted reading through the ignorance was pissing me off....

Just to restate, if you get a good 15 it can be as good or better than 10 on metal..... The MYTH of tens being "faster" "tighter" is a bunch of hogwash.

I would put an IDSPL 15 against any tens in the world on metal... same with the Brahma and 15A.

For example lets assume that a pair of tens has the same surface area as a single 15. The 15 only has to have as much excursion as the tens, but usually they have MORE. the biggest contributing factor to frequency response is inductance, and a properly designed 15 has no problem with this.

Your friend has either the Kicker L7's or the L5's. IMO one of the worst sounding subwoofers made today. I would avoid them if I was you. $900 for subs and amp.....

Two 12" Elemental Designs A-series $590
One JBL BP1200.1 $280

You should have now worries about SPL or SQ with this setup. Not to mention they are small box drivers........that's just a bonus for us f-body guys.

I found another place that carries a brand of square subs. I dunno if kicker manufacturers them or what, but they are from Hart audio. They are in Cali so I had never heard of them before now. I can't comment on the sound because I haven't heard them. But this is what they look like. I just thought it was interesting.

I use to run 2 12s sealed, now I run 1 15 sealed. I like the 15 much better because I listen to a lot of music that gets really low. A good 15 can still sound better than 10s or 12s for metal though. It all depends on the box it goes in.

Next year however, I will be going with a single 12 ported with 1500W RMS. I'll have to keep the gain down since I only really need 1000W RMS. My goal is to make the 12 at least as loud as the 15 I have now (sealed). I will be going with either an eD 12A or a brahma 12, leaning more towards the brahma though.
