Question Subwoofer Set-Up Help!

I just purchased some subwoofers for my 1994 25th anniversary trans am. I have a question about setting them up. I ran the power cable, but I need help with the audio inputs. There are two options: there is a 5-pin connecter (Left and Right (+) and (-) frequencies and ground) that is for high inputs for cars with stock stereos (mine is stock) that you have to splice with a set of speakers, or there is an RCA cable (red and white) that connects to a newer replacement head unit. However, I was wondering if I could just cut off one of the ends of the RCA cable and connect it to one of the speakers next to the back seats, since those speakers only receive bass frequencies anyway. Which is better? Help greatly appreciated, I am putting them in today hopefully.

Re: Subwoofer Set-Up Help!

if your question is to try and run speakers off of pre-amp signal,......no way. i can only imagine bad things happening to your equip if you try it.

Don't even think about putting RCAs in like that... you WILL destroy something.

You basically have to options, run thie Speaker-Level ins on that amp, or buy a Line-Level Converter and use that to convert the speakers to RCA levels, and then use the RCAs.

Re: Subwoofer Set-Up Help!

RCA's are meant to have a lower voltage (2-4 usually) applying a signal to the amp... theres a reason for the other inputs... theoreticaly it should work.. but it def doesnt...

I agree with this, but to answer your ?...you CAN hook them up like that, cuttin one end off and splicing it with the speaker. I have done it but i also fried the outputs on 2 cd players b.c of it, it works fine unless you play with your amp and ground it out ( i was adjusting and bumped my screwdriver to the amp and it fried the cd player, and the other a speaker wire came out and friend it) Also, gettin a new head unit is a good idea, a system will sound better with a good, aftermarket head unit than a stock one. I am a big fan of the JVC Kameleon, they look good, sound good, and NEVER skip, and are not that expensive...I buy all my audio stuff from ebay, and you can easily get a new one for under 200 shipped to your door. the last one I bought I paid 120 shipped, and still am not dissappointed.
