sub upgrade....

Want to upgrade from 2 MTX 6000 10" to 2 10" Alpine Type R's.I'm not sure how the wiring works with the dual voice coils, but how much would need to be changed and would my MTX4250D amp give these enought sound good?

dual voice coil subs are kinda hard to explain, there are 2 voice coils per sub. both voice coils are always the same ohms. most dual voice coil subs are 4 ohms(resistance) each vc. there are differant ways to wire them up. the most common are paralel and in series. paralel would be hooking the 2 positives on the speaker to the positive on the amp, and same with the negatives 2 negative from speaker to negative on amp. now with 2, 4 ohm vc's hooked up in parallel, you cut the ohms in half. now your mono block amp sees 2 ohms. now, if you install another sub the same way, your amp will see 1 ohm. the mtx4250D is rated at 125x1 into 4 ohms and 250x1 into 2 ohms. being that your amp isn't rated to go below 2 ohms, i wouldn't recomend doing that although it might work for awhile.
the other way to wire up dvc subs is in paralel. this invovles wiring the positive on the amp to the positive on one voice coils, from that positive to the other vc's negative, from that negative back to the other positive and then to the of the other vc's. now wiring it up like this makes your amp see a 8 ohm load. wire up two subs like that so you get 2, 8 ohm subs. now wire the 2 8ohm subs in paralel, and your amp now sees 4 ohms. perfect other than one fact. your amp is rated at 125x1 at 4 ohms, that means your subs only see about 62 watts of power. need a bigger amp now. or you could stay with 4 ohm subs and connect them like you have them now. the alpine type-s and type-e are 4 ohms, not as good a speaker, but it fits with your amp. if you have your heart set on the type r's, your gonna need a much bigger amp, i belive type r's handle about 600watts rms per sub so 300 per sub would be the least you would want to run. i hope this helps, i'm not trying to be a know it all. just trying to help. aloha!

If you want to run your amp at 2ohm you will need subs with dual 2ohm VC's. You will wire the VC's of each sub in series making each sub 4ohms. Then you will wire the now 4ohm subs in parallel for a final 2ohm load. This is called series/parallel wirning.

You can also use subs with dual 8ohm VC's. You would wire the VC's of these subs in parallel making each sub 4ohms. You would then wire the now 4ohm subs in parallel for a final 2ohm load.

If you use single coil subs you would want two 4ohm subs wired in parallel for a 2ohm load.
