sub setup
sub setup
ok, for christmas, i got 2 kicker 10'' cvr subs. i am just wondering exactlly how it should be wird...
i was planning on putting all of the normal speaker in the front outputs and putting the subs on the rear because my headunit has a setting to change the rear to subs.
is this what you would do??

Re: sub setup
Not what I would do.....
Recommended wattage is 400 RMS/each....
There is no way your headunit will supply anywhere near enough power for even one, let alone two.. Time to go out and buy an amp...
Ohh and make sure to think about how to wire them... Are they 4 ohm or 2 ohm?? That makes a difference on the amp and wiring planning...
What about a box??? How/where do you plan on installing them???

Re: sub setup
Wiring Options
So it's either a 1 ohm or 4 ohm amp.
I would go 1 Ohm - something like BAMF200/1D
A little extra wattage never hurts, but you get the idea of what you are after. Also don't forget about wiring, and RCAs...
You've really stepped in it though, as a IMHO if you are going to add amps that big for subs, you might as well add another one for the mains, and of course that means upgraded mains....

Re: sub setup
Depending on how loud you wanna get, see about finding something that puts out a good rms at 4 ohms. It will be A LOT more efficient and A LOT less stress on electrical. The lower in the ohms you go the more stress you put on everything. Including your alternator, battery, etc.
Good thing with that as well is you will in fact have more power on tap, if you ever want to upgrade.

Re: sub setup
That depends on what ohm load you want, if your going with a one ohm load you wire both subs in parallel then to the amp. And then if you want 4 ohm load it would be in "series" if my terminology is correct and then to the amp. Rockford fosgate site has all the wiring diagrams for you.
Re: sub setup
If your talking about running them to the stereo directly I wouldnt as the only ohm loads you can get are a 2 or 8 ohm load per sub. Most if not damn near all Head units run at 4ohms so Im more then certain eventually your gonna burn out something.
Re: sub setup
My suggestion would of course be a 4ohm load its more efficient less stress on your electrical and later on if you really wanna get loud you can drop it down to 1ohm with the proper upgrades. This all refers to a setup with an amp.
If you try to run your subs directly to the headunit (HU) you will more then likely burn the HU up. You can always check out the specs on the HU maybe you'll get lucky and its not a 4ohm load maybe its a 2ohm or 8ohm load but highly doubt it as Im 98% they are all 4ohm for the most part.
As for speaker wire a 16 guage should suffice. For power wires I say 4guage is a good place to start, especially as your not looking at a monster setup or anything. You dont want to go too small as it will induce a starvation for power and in turn will "clip" the amp signal to the sub and fry the sub eventually. Sometimes a slow painful death sometimes very quick and painless lol.
