speaker questions

Ok, I've been into this stuff for a good 6 years, so I know the basics. Here are my questions:

-6 1/2" or 6 3/4" for the doors AND sail panels? Do you HAVE to modify the baskets to fit 6 3/4"?

-I have an aftermarket Pioneer HU, bypassing the Monsoon amp; am I running 4 ohms to my stock Monsoon speakers?

-does crutchfield send a wiring harness so i just unplug the old speakers (no cutting), and plug in the new ones?

-top or bottom mount? (I have cool speaker covers and want to keep them)

-for the MOSFET 50x4 that my HU puts out, what RMS and peak watts should i look for (whats a good range of those?), also what is a good sensitivity level? (i know higher is better, but what do you REALLY need?)

Thanks!

-Jeff

Re: speaker questions

1) The mid-woofers are oversized 6-1/2" speakers. Also called 6-3/4" speakers. It's best to make your own set of baffles (basket) to mount them in. See my car's web site to learn more about the baffles.

2) You do not "run 4 ohms" to the stock speakers. The speakers are the load (ohms). The amp or HU hooked up to it doesn't have anything to do with the load that is presented by the speakers. The factory mid-woofers in a Monsoon equipped F-Body are 2ohms. I don't know of any HU's that can power 2ohm speakers.

3) Yes. At least they used to when you bought speakers from them. I would imagine they still do. You can always write Crutcfield and ask.

4) The maximum amount of clean RMS watts an HU can deliver is around 15 to 20W. Anything higher than that is a Max. power spec. Sort of like how the POS Monsoon is rated at 500W when it is nowehere close to running 500RMS watts.

I wouldn't worry about the sensitivity spec. Tuners in car stereos all have very poor performance.

Could I just get 6 1/2" speakers without modification to the baffles?

Yes.

If you wanted to go get speaker harnesses, they're $5.99/pr. at Best Buy. When we install speakers there we solder the harnesses to the speakers and plug them into the factory harness though so if Crutchfield has the harnesses that clamp onto the speakers then just go with those.
