Speaker placement

Okay, having a little bit of trouble getting the sound I like out of my setup and was hoping you guys could help. I have a set of Boston Acoustics Pro-Series 6.5s in the door with the tweeter mounted on my dashpad facing the windshield. I have a set of JL Audio 6.5" subs in the sail panels and an Image Dynamics IDQ10 sub in a JL Audio Vantage box in the trunk. It all powered off of a 2 channel Alpine V12 amp (sub) and a 4 channel Alpine V12 amp (JL's and Bosons). I'm a very tall guy (6'6") and my legs block the speakers in the door so the sound tends to be muddy, especially with the tweeters axis-mounted in the door. With the tweeters on the dash the sound really depends on the song. Sometimes it's a bit too bright, sometimes it's muddy. I don't like harsh/bright tweeters, I'm going for more of a natural sound. Any ideas or suggestions? There is a crossover on the Bostons, and the others are crossed over by the amps. Do you guys have a suggestion for a replacement mid-range speaker for the sail panels, I don't really want the JL subs... they muddy the sound up a lot. Thanks a ton.

you may want to attenuate the tweeter to get rid of some of the harshness. I've got my Focals at -2db even though Focal suggests -4db for dash placement of the tweeter. That is set on the xover so I'm not sure if BA has it on their xovers. Also, if they are that harsh, you may either want to think about a new set of components or get some kick panels.

First, make sure the back speakers are crossed over no higher than 200-250. You can play around in that range to find what you like. As far as the tweeters, set them -2dB if you can. Also, you can play around with the aiming. Directly at the winshield probably isn't the best. Try aimed straight up and then placed one inch back and one inch over from where the two corners of the top dash panel meet the front dash panel and the A-pillar. Mine are that way, and set -2dB they sound pretty good right there. I am going to be moving my soon though to very near the mids. I don't like the separation I get when the tweets are on the dash. They sounded good up there for the first few months, now i'm starting to hear the difference. Also, make sure the rear speakers are not getting the same amount of power as the fronts. You want them to blend in with the front, not be another full source coming from the back.

The tweeter location ChameleonGreen described is precisely where they are located. The tweeters are set at -2dB, but as you say, I can hear the separation at times. Also, with 2 mid-range, and 3 bass speakers, it can be a bit much in comparison to the two tweeters. I liked having the tweeters down by the door speakers, but when I sit down to drive (it's a six speed, so I have a clutch) my legs block those speakers, so I lost the sound almost completely when driving. I used to have Eclipses in the sail panels, but that was bright... the Bostons have the sound I'm looking for, it's more a question of placement that I get good clarity, dont get the separation and don't block the tweeters with my legs... Thanks a ton for the input and any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Do you think mounting the tweeters in pods would help?
