simple rewire job?

Greetings,

I hope I'm posting in the right place, and I hope this is even worth posting over. I'm trying to get some ideas on how I'd go about re-wiring my Cigarette Lighter (or accessory 12v plug) from a constant wire to a switched wire, so that the plug is only active when the ignition is turned to 'On'. Any ideas? Diagrams?

Thanks!

you could tap the switched audio wire that goes to the HU. Um....yeah...that's what I'd do.

You'll need a relay and any switched wire to trigger it.

That might pull a bit more than it is supposed to.... i personally wouldn't.

I would run a relay.

There's the right way (relay) and there's the rigged way. Are you doing it because you are using the cigarette lighter as a means of powering your radar detector and don't want it to stay on? If so...man...Just wire in your radar detector! No more messy lookin wires...

You read my mind! Wire in my radar detector? Now, where's the best place to do that at? First thing that comes to mind is to parallel it with the posi wire on the Cigarette Lighter, and perhaps splice it into the switched wire of the stereo head unit.. What are your suggestions? I've only had my camaro about 2 weeks.. I'll look in my Chilton's manual for wiring diagrams and try and figure something out, but I'd sure like to hear your suggestion!

Thanks!

LOL!!!! I KNEW IT!!! Call me a mind reader. I'm actually doing the same thing this week. The way I've done it in the past was wire it directly into the fuse box. That way, you can run the wire right up the the edge of the headliner and windsheild and they over the the driver's side A-pillar and down. From there, it's just a straight shot to the fuse box by the door. As far as wiring it up there...a buddy of mine always did that for me...so I was going to ask him how & where exactly he did that on the fuse box. From what I remember...he just found a spot for it on a switched fuse. I haven't had a chance to fool with it this weekend since I've been working, so my first day off to mess with it is wednesday...it just so happens that he's off that day too...so I'll probably just have him show me what's up again. I never really paid attention before.

The best part about this is not having to have that dangly wire hanging down in your face or in front of your HVAC and radio controls. I'm sure there are some that will probably chime in and say that you shouldn't fool with your fuse box...or that you should get relays...or whatever...but me personally....every car I've owned other than the ones I have now have had the detectors hard wired like that. My buddy has done the same with all his cars. NO PROBLEM. If there's a better EASIER way, I'd sure like to know.
