How much would it cost to set up a system where you have a small camera somewhere in the rear of your car and have a lcd monitor in place of the rear view mirror. I have seem them done a few cars and I was just wondering how much the materials would cost? Also would it be possible to make it have like two channels, one channel to the camera and the other to a playstation2 or something when I am NOT driving.

first you would need a lcd screen with multiple audio/video inputs. I know some of the new alpines have it and some others too, that would cost anywhere from $300-$2500 depending on wat you want to get. A little camera that would fit somewhere in the rear would probably cost you around $100-$500, depending on make and model and size. I have thought of this idea many times and when I get some funding this summer I will most likely follow through.

 

I haven't seen any long LCDs. I am in the process of finding a perfect spot for my rear color camera that cost me like $20. It will accompany my dash cam & front cam. I have a Jensen remote controlled switcher 4 source input, 2 output that cost me $20 on Ebay, and everything is 12 volt. Also have a Jensen VCR from thezeb.com connected.

 

First question is why you want a camera in the back of the car? As for the rear view mirror LCD screen there is an article in JUNE/JULY of 2002 where a guy uses an Accele monitor that is mounted as part of the rear view (like 2"). Im not sure if its just a small monitor that he fabricated into the rear view or if thats the way they sell them.
