Questions on Getting decent sound

My car originally had the bose system, but long before i got 'er, that was all ripped out, So as of now i have a Sony head unit, with a couple of stock sized sony 6.5s in the front. Needless to say my sound sucks. I want something with good sound, but i dont really wanna go all out with an entire system. Since 6x9s dont fit in the stock rear locations, Other than shlapping a couple of em in boxes, i dont really know what else to do. Any ideas? suggestions? would that even give me better sound? I'm not looking for a system, just something better than the crappy sound i have now. Thanks

First off... dump the sony equipment that's your first problem...

Atleast upgrade to some better speakers, and maybe a better HU.

Speakers:
CDT
Alpine
Infinity

HU:
Alpine
Eclipse
Clarion
Pioneer

Sony's car audio is some of the worst stuff on the market right now for sound quality, and sounding good.

That sucks. Shoulda asked before i bought all the junk i reckon. What about the 6x9s in a couple of boxes idea? would that help at all? would better speakers make up for the size difference?

6x9's in boxes ... No. Don't even touch speakers that are not round. No oval crap. You sound like you want more bass correct? Boxed 6x9s wont give you that. Contact steve at www.subthump.com and ask for either a stealthbox if you have ttops or go with a full box for the hatch if you have a hardtop (only from Steve. Dont go with some universal crap that you can get at bestbuy and it sticks out like a sore thumb over the gas tank)

Here's my old setup with his box:

That box with two NAME BRAND (no roadgear) Im talking alpine, eclipse, JL, MA Audio, brammats... subs will work.

Now that your bass need is fed. On to sound quality upfront. Honestly you dont need any speakers in the rear if you have subs. Some nice components as mentioned above like infinity, mb quart, focal will cover any sound quality issues you may have. Only go with 6.5's upfront, nothing in the rear, and two 12" subs. You will own.
