Power window replacement ... other motors?
Power window replacement ... other motors?
My 1995 Z28, as you all know has really slow power windows (thanks GM). My passenger side however is on the way out. Just barely closed the window last try.
I am wondering if power windows from more modern/other GM cars of similar year interchange? For example, my mothers old 1996 Grand Prix power windows were easily twice as fast. Would it be possible to swap a set from another GM car to have them a bit faster...or is that not worth looking at? What about Fords interchanging? Their power windows seem to last longer and are quicker ... which I hate to say, but Ford knows something about power windows GM doesn't.
If not, I will just buy another one off ebay and replace.

I would just go to a parts store and purchase a new one. That way you should get a lifetime warranty on top of it. I don't know of any window motors interchanging between different car platforms. I do know of some members doing a "thermal resistor bypass mod" or something of that sort which they alledge made the windows operate quicker. I think the reason yours are slowing down is simply because they are getting ready to be replaced soon.
The other problem is simply the weight of the glass. F-bodies have huge windows, and really only a small motor to push them up and down. It very well may be the same motor as the Grand Am, but it would still operate slower because it would be doing more work.
Actually, the f-body motors are probably more powerful than a Grand Am simply so they don't wear out so quickly.

I understand weight is a problem. But you can apply a lot of pressure to the top of a faster GM power window while it is rolling up and it hardly slows the motor down. I don't feel the weight is significant enough to justify half the speed.
I am wondering if in the 98 and up cars if the windows are faster?
Anyone know...maybe the solution is to buy one of those window motors.
I was just hoping maybe they interchange or something... but by the looks of things I will just replace it with a stock window motor.

When you change the window motor, you could try re-greasing the tracks. This may help speed it up at least a little. Don't know if there's a specific type of grease or lube to use, but I'm sure someone on here does.
Oh, and definitely change it before it goes out entirely so you can adjust the window position to line up with the access holes in the door.
