My setup

I have an Alpine V12 600 watt 4 channel amp.

2x 10" JL W0 subs.

MTX 6.5" mids and tweets.

Sony Xplode deck.

I'm getting a 1 farad cap in the next week or so.

The deck powers the backseat speakers and the Amp runs the subs and the front mids and tweets.

Not the most efficient setup.

My question was:

What kind of mids should I put in the backseat?

What size amp should I get to run my subs or should the new amp run the mids?

Use your 4-channel amp to power your front and back speakers, then get a seperate sub amp. Get an Alpine V12 to match the rest of your set-up. Try the M300 or M500.

Wait.... I just realized the only Alpine you have is the other amp! hehehehe In that case..... you could get the JBL BP600.1 for the subs. Cheapest "quality" amp.... at about $175.

i agree with firebirddude, get another sub amp and run the other 4 speakers off the 4 channel amp. thats if you can afford it. other than that you can do exactly what you said before gripenfelter. with W0's all you really need is a few hundred watts rms each. i forget what they are rated at but with 3 in my Iroc way back in the day i had a PPI PC275 rated at 300Wrms and they POUNDED. granted the amps underrated but you are probably looking at 100-150Wrms for each one. so if you can swing it try and get a seperate sub amp as long as your deck can support a pair of RCA's.

FWIW this guy always helps out in the LT1 tech section so lets give him some support in his stereo endeavors!!!

Price really isn't a concern.

I want a good quality sound.

So an Alpine M300 or M500?

What about the mids and tweets?

I need to know asap because I'm making a fibreglass display box for the amps.

in regards to speakers, your best bet would be to go and try and hear as many as possible. i like the adire speakers, but everyone has their preference. if you are going to have the amps visible and want consistency then try another alpine amp. if you could care less then that JBL amp is cool (but ugly IMO) and i myself like orion amps and older PPI amps. like i said, W0's dont need a lot of power to pound. best bet is to hear what you can and make a decision.

I couldn't agree with this statement more. Thats why I don't like to make speaker recommendations. Take MB Quart for example. Some folks swear by this brand but I wouldn't own them if you gave them too me. To my ears their tweeters are like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Come on. If somebody gave them to you?? LOL

exactly. I like to have my amps match. But some people don't really care. Dollar per watt... the JBL is better, but if I already owned an alpine....but that's just me.

Even if someone gave them to me. I like my hearing too much to subject them to the harsh sound of an MB tweeter.

I have MB Quartz 116 in my backseats, and since they arent pointing right at your face, they dont sound harsh. They are a great speaker in my own opinion..... I have Orion XTR components in the front, and they are totally bombproof. I highly recommend these!

Im in the process of completing my system too, I have a Rockford Fosgate head unit, 300x (389watts rms) 4 channel for the front and rear speakers, and I have the hatch speakers running off the deck. My next move is to get two 12" subs and another Rockford amp. Im goin with Orion XTR subs as well....... I can get them for $100 cdn each. Cant beat that!

Thats just what im doing with my setup.... you might get some ideas from that? Go nuts

What's your amp's model number? What is the impedance of your subs?

I agree for the most part with everyone except that I would bridge the 4 channel amp and run a good set of components up front with it. I would suggest you goto some car audio stores and listen to different speakers and decide what you like.

Also get some decent speakers for the back (again it depends on what you like so you'll have to listen to some speakers, I would go with a coaxial speaker in the back) but I'd run them off the HU. A stronger front stage sounds much better to me. But if you like rearfill then go ahead and amp the rears too.

For the subs I'd run at leas 500W RMS to them (250Wper sub). A good amp to go with would be the JBL 600.1 if you're looking for a good bang for your buck amp. If you want to keep everything alpine then go with the MRD-M500. Make sure you set your gains correctly and use a low clip ratio. The W0s aren't rated for much power so you'll be over powering them a lot, if you want to be on the safe side you could get a different pair of subs but I'd just set the gains low and see how they last.

Sorry I made a mistake.

They are 10" W0 subs not 12". I haven't even opened the box yet. I bought them in summer because I got a great deal on them and never opened the box.

They are 4ohm impedence and require a .75 cubic foot enclosure.

Do they sound better in a ported box?

I'm making stealth boxes for each side of the hatch for them with an elevated lighted platform on the hatch deck for the amp.

All fibreglass.

I don't know the specs on the Alpine V12 amp anymore. I bought it new in the spring of 1997 if that helps. I just know its a 600 watt 4 channel. (MRV-600??)

I checked out the Alpine MRD-500. Looks pretty good with the digital readout and all. I'll go with that one if I can't find something better in the same range.

I listened to a few mids and tweets at A&B sound today.

JBLs don't sound like much unless you crank them and even then they aren't that crisp.

Some JBLs had too much noise coming through.

I liked a set of Clarion 6.5" mids with a tilting tweeter. Sounded the best of the whole display.

I'm going to check out some more on the weekend.

sealed vs ported vs bandpass vs etc etc is all the same as picking speakers, here them all and then decide. each offers its cost/benefits and it really depends on your musical preference.
