My baby needs a new radio
My baby needs a new radio
The deck in my '95 Z28 just stopped working. It was first an intermitent problem with the volume going in and out and the display flashing, now there is now sound at all. (The volume scale doesn't move on the LED display. When I turn it from off to on, the CD ejector tries to eject a CD that isn't there.) I have the OEM Delco Bose AM/FM CD system. Some have told me I need to replace all my speakers if I swap in a non-OEM deck. Is that true? My car has ~54k miles and I will be replacing it with a new Camaro in 2-3 years, but until then I need some tunes. I'm basically looking for basic AM/FM and CD functions... nothing fancy. I am fairly handy with auto electronics, but how accessible these 4th gens are I haven't a clue.
Any suggestions, tips or feedback from others that have done this before would be appreciated.
FYI, this is primarily a 2nd car that's only driven every couple of weeks, or when my wife is out with our Tahoe.
Thanks in advance.

Any aftermarket unit will work with old speakers. You can do it in 2 ways:
1) "Safe". Do a search, get special Bose adapter to hook between aftermarket HU and the rest of your sustem
2) "Hackish" Connect high-level outputs of new HU directly to your Bose harness, don't forget amp turn-on lead. Many people run it this way for years with no problems, but there is a chance you can possibly burn your HU or Bose amp.

Just buy a radio of your liking get the gm harness, dash kit, and antenna adapter and put it in. Make sure to connect the remote wire from radio to the power antenna/amp turn on wire in the harness and bam you are good to go.
IMO an adapter isnt required i ran a radio like this in my bose system for over 5 years no problems

I'm not sure I would take the above advice. Bose used common grounds on some of the speakers. Even if it did work, which Im sure it didn't correctly the volume would be hella loud at a very low level on the new deck. You can just add a deck to monsoon with no issues but not bose. You need to go to get to correct adaptor from pie, pac, schosche which ever you choose and do it right.
Thanks guys. I spent the weekend getting the Christmas lights up so I'm still radioless.
I found a couple sources for the adapter. I even have a spare alpine deck that I pulled out of my '01 Tahoe that may fit. I'm going to do a little more research before I move forward. Thanks again.

I would never run high levels to a factory amp. that spells disaster. Find a nice deck with 3 sets of rca out's. best buy sells an rca to +/- wire adapter. Run your rca out's low level to the input side of the amp. you'll be able to control the amp with the deck and tweak it out very well. Whenever I get a mach mustang in there that's how I always do it and never had a problem except for an occasional amp pop when you adjust station/power.
for that, i recommend one of the higher end alpine or pioneer decks
