Monsoon System

I am thinking about buying a 1996 Camaro Z28, and I was wondering if the monsoon stereo system came standard, or if it is an option and not every Z28 comes with one??
I also have another question, how easy is it to install subs into the stock head unit, or should i just put an aftermarket HU in instead?

Thanks a lot, Ben

I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, the Monsoon was not available for the Camaro until 97. Optional audio system for the 93-96 Camaros was the Bose system.

Whether the Monsoon was available already in 96 or not, it was an option, not standard.

Can't really help you on the sub question... I'm not that much into the stereo stuff.

96 is Bose. Buy an aftermarket HU you'll be better off. I like Pioneer and Alpine.

The BOSE is an option. Putting in new speakers is as easy as running speaker wire from your new HU and removing a few panels. Honestly, I believe anyone with any mechanical inclination should be able to do it if they take their time and don't let themselves get frustrated. Check out www.installdr.com for assistance on doing the install.

Also, make sure and check the gear you're gonna get with us here first. We don't want you ending up with crap. Your best bet will be buying online as you can save up to 50% doing so.

What budget did you have in mind?
Do you want rear speakers too, they are all 6.5S?
Do you want a sub?

Answer those questions and I can help steer you in the right direction.

I already have a system in my 92 nissan maxima, it consits of a JVC KD-SX870 for my HU, fact. BOSE 4X6's in front, Kenwood KFC-6906S for the rear and 3 MTX 10" 6000 series subs, powered by an MTX 6500D.
Do you think that I might be able to put the 6X9's in the back of the Z28 if I did a little adjusting?? And what size are the front speaker, b/c i am planning on getting some 5.1 Infinity PERFECT's components for the front, they are 5.25". But if they wouldn't fit in the Z28 then I wouldnt buy em. Also what size is the 5th speaker you were talking about earlier?? and if i didnt get the optional BOSE system in my Camaro, then what would i get??
OK one last question, haha, would I get more power and would it sound better if I put in my aftermarket JVC head unit in or keeping the factory one in there, or would it be harder to install subs that way?

Thanks a lot, and sorry bout all the questions, I just wanna make sure that i can get some good sound out of the Z28 for all the money I am gonna but one for haha.

Use your aftermarket since you already have it, it will produce a cleaner signal. You won't be able to fit the 6 x 9 speakers without cutting sheet metal. Look into getting 6.5 speakers all the way around. Try to keep the same brand. Buy the best speakers you can afford and get an external amp to drive the fronts atleast. I personally like Focal speakers. You won't be dissappointed with them. Check www.subthump.com for a box for those three 10" drivers.

yeah the bose system was awesome... when i had my 96 camaro i put in a Pioneer HU and it made the Bose system sound even nicer. Now, with my new Firebird i have the monsoon and i don't like it as much.. the bose would NEVER sound crappy even when all the way turned up, but the monsoon seems really sensitive.
oh well, i miss my bose... good choice....

6.5's all the way around
2 - front
2 - rear
1 - rearwell, sub
the way they positioned everything made the system utilize the rear hatch to produce better sound.

So the 5th speaker then is a rearwell sub?

Yea and I have an MTX 4202 amp just sittin in my room that i would hook up to the front speaker and run the HU power to the rear speakers. And the box I have for the 3 10's is pretty nice and small, so i dont know about a custom box.

What do you think about 6.5 components in the front?

components rock. They are the way to go IMO. ONLY for the front though. There's really no point in putting them in the rear. Some people do though...I think it's a waste of money. For the rear, co-ax is just fine.
Just to let you know the difference I heard between co-ax and seperates...My fiance's cousin put a Brittney Spears live cd in once and I SWEAR I could hear the top of the legs on her leather pants rub together as she walked across the stage, it was so clear. Now THAT's clarity!
