Monsoon & sub question

I have the stock Monsoon CD system in my car (no changer). I'm going to get 2 10" subs with a decent amp to put in the back.

I'm happy with the performance of the headunit, but not the bass in the stock speakers. I don't want to change the HU right now because of $$$.

This is what i DONT want: I crank up the new system and have great mids and highs and awesome bass from the subs, but horrible distortion from the stock speakers trying to put out the bass. The subs would be connected to the HUs bass controls. so anytime i would turn it up, i get great bass from subs, and bad distortion from speakers.

This is what I DO want: a way to turn up the subs, separate from the bass controls on the stock HU. I need some sort of bass controler, to keep the stock system working on the mids and highs (Pop _ _ - ), and a separate controller to turn up the bass on the subs.

Is there a way to do that easily? or just not too hard?

-Thanks
Jeff

The easiest thing to do would be to connect some 12dB/octave high pass filters to your front woofers.

A 12dB/octave filter takes a series connected capacitor and a parallel connected choke.

A 100Hz high pass filter would probably be ideal.

Since the stock woofers are 2ohms the values you would need are...

Choke = 6.36mh (milli-henries)
Cap = 800uf (micro farads)
These are not standard values so you would have to go with "close enough" values unless you know how to wind your own chokes (not very economical).

The choke would get connected across the inputs to the woofers and then the cap would get connected in series to the + connection of the woofer.

To be honest with you the thing I would do is either live with the setup as it is or upgrade to after-market gear.

Couldnt he get a crossover and control the bass from that instead of using the HU bass controls? I am using the OEM1 and have an mtx crossover to control the bass from my PG amp, I keep the bass on the HU at mid or just below so i dont distort the stock speakers at all. just my two cents.

If he were to go that route it would be best to just go ahead and replace the entire POS Monsoon system. Making his own passive crossovers would be the econmical way to go if you intend to keep the POS Monsoon.

Until i can pay off a very expensive ticket, i'll be replacing the Monsoon system. I'm just going to wire it to the stock HU bass controls. And deal with the consequences until i can replace the HU.

Anyone know were i can find details on how to wire everything up?
