Monsoon details?
Monsoon details?
Hi guys,
I'm collecting information about the stock stereo in my car. I have an '02 Camaro with the Monsoon system. I have seen claims that it is an 8-speaker system, and other claims that it is a 10-speaker system. I have heard that it is 200 watts, and others that it is 500 watts. I have heard claims that it has one sub, and claims that it has two. I have the UN0 and UZ7 RPO codes.
There are six visible speaker grilles. One on each door, one next to the rear seats, and one on each side under the hatch. As far as I can tell, the door and hatch speakers are 6.5", and there is a sub on each side of the rear seat. I think there might be a 4" speaker along with each sub.
I haven't taken anything apart yet, but I've looked around a lot online and not found much information on the stock system. Who can tell me what's there? Did I miss any speakers? What about the amplifier location? Any other info would be good too.
Thanks!

Re: Monsoon details?
Teke, I think that the 2000+ Camaros have a different Monsoon system than 1999 and earlier. Reportedly, they fixed the problem. I'm guessing that if you check your RPO codes, you won't have UZ7, and you might not have UN0 either.
I can crank up the bass as much as I want. It's loud, strong, and deep. If anything blows, I'll be perfectly happy to replace it, but I have no problems with the stock system.

Re: Monsoon details?
I like the monsoon system, but I can't find any more than the 6 speakers you found, but with mine being in a 97 it might differ from yours. also, if I saw correctly when cleaning my interior it looks like the amp is under the passenger seat. but I haven't had to do anything to the interior and I am not really a sound system kind of person, as long as it plays my cd's with no major distortion and I can hear the music I am fine with it.
Re: Monsoon details?
The way I understand it is the TA's/Firebirds had the 10 speaker set up and the Camaros had the 8
although I only count 6 visible speakers in my '02 Z28 the *can* claim 8 because two of them are 2-way - prob the ones in the sail panels . . . maybe in the trunk?? Not important
the differences in power ratings of the amp are like with all stereo equipment - the highest numebr which impresses the most is the 'peak' output and may be at low quality or high distortion or just an occasional hit
The lower value (in this case 200 W) is the RMS output (i believe RMS stands for Root Mean Square - ask your math teacher what that means) which is a more realistic output rating - if ever comparing audio equipment outputs you should always compare the RMS outputs
Hope this helped some

Re: Monsoon details?
As I was a math minor, I know exactly what Root Mean Square means. Unfortunately, it is misused in car audio, so all it really means in this case is how much power the amp can deliver continuously.
That said, I think you're wrong. As I was telling Teke, I think that '99 and earlier cars have a 200w peak system, and '00 and newer cars have the 500w peak system. Speaking only of Monsoon-equipped Camaros, BTW -- Firebirds and TA's got the 500-watt system much earlier.

Re: Monsoon details?
I have the UNO and UZ7 RPO codes. Window sticker says "Monsoon 500 watt (peak) premium sound system electronically tuned AM/FM stereo radio with seek-scan, digital clock...compensated volume with 8 speakers and auxiliary amplifier..."

So I have 500 watts (peak)?
It sounds good with my Kenwood recever but it does not sound like 500 or even 200 watts.
Maybe I just need to put a 10 in the back.

Re: Monsoon details?
If you don't have the factory receiver, then you're probably not using the factory amp. I don't know how it all works. You probably had more power before you installed the Kenwood.
If you have the same RPO codes as me, then you already have a sub, or maybe two (that's one of the questions I asked earlier).

OK here is the deal.
Door speakers are 2 in each door one 6 3/4 and a separate tweeter.
Back speakers are 6 3/4 subs.
Then 4 inch speakers in the hatch.
Amp is in the back by the spare tire.

Re: Monsoon details?
JakeRobb...On the factory Camaro Monsoon system the front tweeter channels are NOT powered by the amp. There are 8 speakers total as crazypurgatory stated above. I positively guarantee that if you like your music loud, you WILL blow the speakers. I seem to blow at least one every time I take an extended road trip with the t-tops off. I'd change the speakers, but have been unable to find good replacements. This is due to the fact that GM decided to build this sytem with 2 ohm speakers. There's alot of good info out there about this system. I used to have some links to wiring schematics, actual specs, etc. Can't seem to find them right now for some reason. If you're really interested, PM me and I'll see if I can dig all that stuff up again.

Re: Monsoon details?
I found some pretty good info on the Monsoon system here, here, and here. LS1Tech is rocking my world today.
The stock speakers are all two ohms, which means that if you keep the factory head unit and amp, most aftermarket speakers won't be very loud. There are a handful of 2-ohm aftermarket speakers out there which will be as loud as the stock speakers.
Rockford Fosgate makes a 6.5" sub which works as a drop-in replacement for the subs in the sail panels. It's not 2 ohms, but it's much more efficient than the stock subs, so it doesn't matter. Besides, upgrading from a paper cone makes a big difference with subs.
I looked around for high-end 1.5 DIN receivers that wouldn't look so out of place on the dash. It looks like Alpine used to make one, but I don't think they make it any more. Pioneer makes a couple low-end head units that fit like the factory radio, but I'm really hoping for a higher-end CD player.
Are there any head units that can be connected to the factory steering wheel audio controls?
