Louder...please...

I have Xplod 6.5s in the doors, 6.5s in the backseat and 6x9s in the hatch. When I crank up the volume (again...Xplod HU) to about 75%, I get distortion. Will an amp make my car louder or are the speakers taking all they can handle? Really, how big of a speaker can you stuff in those doors?? (All new wiring too.) There's gotta be a way to make my car louder... Also, why are my 6x9s so much quiter than the 6.5s? Thanks...

Honestly... it's your equipment... Sony Explodes are uhm... how do I say this nicely... Crap....

An amp can make it louder, but I'd suggest upgrading your equipment for sure if you want "clean" loudness...

There are 4 things you can do to make things louder...

1) More speakers
2) More power
3) Larger speakers
4) Any combination of the above.

If you are only using the HU to power the speakers that is why you are getting so much distortion. The onboard amp inside a HU is of very low quality and power. It may say that it pushes 45Wx4 but it can only deliver about 15W of clean power. The 45Wx4 is a MAX power figure and means absolutely nothing. RMS power ratings are what matter.

How is it that you are running 3 sets of speakers off of the HU?

By the way, where the volume **** is when distortion starts is indicative of virtually nothing. Some decks have a fairly quick gain on the amp and others don't. It is not a sign of quality or lack there of.

Sorry it took my so long to reply... The HU supports 3 sets of speakers and a pre-amp for the sub. If I do amp the speakers, it would only be the hatch 6x9s - Cerwin Vega. I hear they are pretty good. So ultimately I would be looking for a 4 channel amp right? 2 channels for the speakers and the other two bridged for my sub... How big of an amp should I be looking for if my sub is 400Wrms/800Wpeak? Thanks alot guys...

Throw out the stuff you have including the headunit. Buy some nice infinity or other high end brand speakers and get a nice head unit, alpine, pioneer, clarion, etc... Then get an amp for those speakers and you will be crankin.
