JL's breaking glass
JL's breaking glass
okay I was asking a guy about the JL 12W7 becuase I was going to get two of them in my last camaro but now I have ttops so it wont work but anyway he said that if i put two 12W7's it could break my glass. I dont really believe but i will believe this. At a different audio shop. a kid put two 13W7's in a trans am ttop and supposedly he blew the seals off the ttops. I dont think i'd want to test this out but how much do you guys think it would take to blow those things off? by the way anyone here have JL's? im getting the stealthbox on driver and passenger side (custom) with w3v3's.
In my avalanche i had 3 jl w3 15's. they will hit hard but as far breaking glass.... that takes a whole lot. As far as blowing the ttop seals, if the car was completely closed off, air pressure will release through the weakest spot it can find. Thats why alot of cars with sunroofs and a lot of bass have the same problem. But, you going with w3 in such a small sealed box, you're not gonna break anything. It will sound great, but no be on the ignorance level.

A 10W3 in a stealth box is about the perfect setup for a camaro unless you are big into competitions or need bass that you can hear a mile away. Putting 2 12W7's in an fbody would be pretty much be suicide for your ears. Especially if powered right. I don't know if they would bust your rear window, but I don't think it would be too far off. Those things are 750-1000 Watts a piece, and punch like Tyson. At most I would go with a W6, but that wont fit in the drivers side stealth.
I have had problems blowing seals in the past, in different vehicles but I was like pentavolvo running a pair of sealed box 15's with 1500 watts outa some hcca's.
It will take out windowseals if you pound too hard without opening your windows\sunroof ect. next highest casualty item would have been alternators\batteries.
Never broke a window with SPL, more likely to do it with UHF than low freq anyways.

Theoretically, any frequency can potentially break glass... just depends on the resonance of the material. But that point aside, I believe we're dealing with a pressure (dB) issue here, not frequencies.
As for the subject at hand, you'll be fine. I'm not a big fan of huge systems or anything, but your ears are going to bleed before you ever shatter glass with a small setup like that. And as for blowing ttop seals... it's possible, but again unlikely. I guess if you had, for some reason, completely sealed the vehicle off from any pressure escaping, then it might be enough to break the seals... but I highly doubt it.

If any pair of 12's was going to break your seals, it'd be a pair of 12w7s. That said, there is NO WAY you need that much bass in a car as small as an F-body. A single 10" is best for sound quality IMO. If you like your bass extra thumpy, go for a 12". If you like more than that, well, then I guess you won't listen to my advice.
