Question JL Stealthbox and MTX Stealthbox?

Ok guys im the one who started the whole I need bass thread, and from what you guys have told me i should give up getting like a 6" sub and putting it in the speaker holes; and just get like a JL Audio Stealthbox with a 10" or a MTX stealthbox with a 10" subwoofer.

You guys say that should give me about the power that i want but I am really new to the whole custom audio stuff. So will i be able to hear it very easily from the inside? From how far away will someone be able to hear it from the outside with a good 10" sub and a good bass pumping song?

How big of an amp would I need to get to be able to easily suport it?

Would it be a good idea to buy a USED jl audio stealthbox with a 10" already in it?

How easy is it to blow out subs?

Oh and since I have a 94 camaro if i got the jl stealthbox would i need to get a new drivers side back panel that would cover it?

Is there anyway id be able to stuff my clubs in the back! i really dont want to keep them in my backseat!!!! I have a ping hoofer 3 if that helps?

If you get say a JL 10W3 you will need around 250 RMS power. As far as amps, its mainly personal choice, so everyone on here is gonna tell you something different. Just stay away from cheap crap like lightning audio and stuff. An old way of telling a decent amp is to spend about $1 per watt. So if you get an amp thats 250 watts you wanna pay around 250. Now with technology improving, and online offering cheaper used products..Id say look for something like an MTX or Kicker amp thats only gonna run aroudn $150+ and you'll have plenty of power.

yes people will be able to hear you from a good distance if you have a 10W3 with the right amount of power. Our cars are hatchback...which helps channel the sound towards the front of the car and out the windows..making them louder.

yes, a used stealthbox will be fine...just make sure its a W3 if you want a good bit of bass. The W0's are fine...those are mostly for smaller inclosers with limited power. The W3 will take more power...so this depends on what type of amp you are gonna get.

Blowing out subs all depends on how far you go over the recommended RMS power handling. The max power handling is big in this too..but you will wear down the sub if you are constantly giving it more than it can handle.

NO you dont need a new drivers back panal. yes you can still hold the clubs...its designed so you can keep your TTops back there. As long as your clubs dont go into the little hole on the driver side(which is where the stealthbox goes) you will be fine.

Is there any real difference between the MTX and the JL Audio stealthboxes? Is one better?

To put my golf clubs in the back i do use the little hole.

Are the sony XPLOD amps any good? I like the look of them...

Also can you get the amp mounted like anywhere you want? Like inbetween the rear seats on that little mound?

One of my buddies had the MTX stealth box and switched to a JL stealthbox and the JL blew the MTX away. It's made out of different material. The JL is made out of fiberglass, and I think the MTX is some sort of plastic-but not sure. I have the JL Vantage box and bought my own sub (Alpine Type S). Sounds awesome.
You can put the amp wherever you want, but your going to have to run the wires to the sub. If I were you I would either mount it to the back of the trunk or put it in where the spare tires goes. If you look at page 5 in my signature you will see my setup.

JL has two versions of this box. One is called the "stealthbox" which is the high-end fiberglass version. I think it sells for $300-400 (not exactly sure). They also have what they call the "vantage" box. This box is made from the same or similar material as the mtx version. It's a dense molded plastic. The JL version is still the one to get though. Not only does it sound better, it fits much nicer too. I would stay away from the loaded ones--especially used ones. A lot of those have w0's in them.

If your car has the panel on the driver's side that extends down, then you may have to either cut it or replace it. If you want an inexpensive stealthbox you can take a look at my custom ones. Link's in sig. I would recommend getting an elemental designs 10" sub and put in it. Those bad boys rock and are comparable in price to the jl or alpine 10s. JMO.

I'd just like to second what Erik 94TransAm said about the Alpine Type-S subwoofer. I'm using one in my Vantage Stealthbox with an MTX 6500D amp and it blows away the JL 10W3 I used to have. It hits much harder than the JL and sounds better too.

Megabass I saw on your website that you offered passenger side stealthboxes... I might be very very interested in that so I am going to try and contact you.

Do you own or run that company?

I do!

And I agree with LS1 Rulz about the Alpine. I neglected to mention them.

I had an MTX sealthbox in my car, It had a 10 inch MTX 6000 subwoofer with a 500 watt peak handling capacity. I was using a 350W RMS MTX amp with the gain set to half power. Inside the car it pounded pretty good. Outside the car your couldnt really hear it if you were 5 feet away. I dont know how much bass you want. It is definatly enough bass to shake your mirrors and have a nice stout thumping feeling in your seat.

IT wasnt enough for me, I now have 2 12" DHD subs in he back feeding off a 1000W crunch AMP. NOW THAT POUNDS, it makes the MTX stealth box sound like nothing.

If you want an ok setup get the MTX with the built in amp. TI bought MTX stealhbox and a Jl 10w3 D4 to go with it. I power it with a jl 250/1 and the front with a Xtant 202M both amps on panels that were made to fit behind the spare tire. It can be done if you make panels to mount them on and remove the spare tire braket that the tire bolts to. I also installed a .5 farad cap under the panel on the passenger side behind the seatbelt mechanism. The sub sounds awesome! My only regret is not getting the JL box to go with it.

I will post pics if someone can tell me how
