installed a CD player in my g/f's car(have a problem)

she owns a 2000 sentra and a lot of the buttons were broke so she wanted another factory cd player. So I found one bought it thing looked brand new. Put it in everything works fine except it gets a read error with the cd's sometimes. This is with burnt cd's and regular store bought cd's. Any idea on what would cause this read error??

The player could be dirty, get a cleaning kit and try it.

The laser that reads the data off the cd could be bad also.

good luck man, tell us how it goes. You should start with the easy and cheap stuff first, then if you cant trouble shoot it, take it in, or get a new one.

The reason I mentioned this is I had one acting somewhat the way you are explaining. it was under warranty and I got it fixed for free, but it was only 3 months old and it started funny. It could also be a loose connection inside the radio and it makes connections at times. Hope you figure it out.

You would have to take the radio apart and check the wires. It's not that hard to do if you take your time. I have done a couple that way(warranty was expired) to check some problems with other radios. Maybe you will get lucky and the cleaning will work. If the lens is dirty it won't be able to read the data off the cd. Good luck

Head units can be fussy things....I had a Sony Expode (name says it all) and it would cut out every time the bass hit..

well I used the cleaning cd and of course it read it fine and worked. Then we put a cd and it worked for about 2minutes then it quit. Then it hasn't been able to read any cd's since. I just don't know what the hell to do

This is right, the laser could be bad, but instead of replacing the whole stereo, since you already have 2, the new and the old one, that I am assumeing are the same...just take the laser unit out of the old one and put it in the new one; if you get desperate.
