I SUCK at audio stuff. Need help picking a good amp.

I already have a directed 300/2 amp powering a set of components in the front doors of my car (I think they're Polk, but I know they're 100W rms). I want to get another set of those same components in the sail panels, and then buy another amp (400/4 for all four of the components). Then, I plan on using the 300/2 for a sub, and get a stealth box in the back. I was hoping to get another directed amp so that they look good next to each other. I have no idea what amp would work good (But I was hoping for another directs). Also, does all this sound ok to you guys? Or am I going about this terrible?...I don't know much about audio stuff.

Depending on your budget, you could go with the Directed A404 (45w x 4 @ 4ohms, 14.4v) or the A1004 (85w x 4 @ 4ohm 14.4v). Both will sound just fine, while you can use the other amp bridged for your sub.

I saw both of those amps, but shouldn't I try to put 100 watts to each component? So the A404 won't be close to enough, and the A1004 still won't be enough, will it?

A higher powered amp would come closer to the RMS handling of the speaker, yes, but it's not neccessary. RMS power is the power that the driver is able to handle continuously. Many speakers work just fine with a lower power level. Usually you want to have an amp put around 3/4 the power handling of the speaker so you get good, full sound, but don't blow it up. I think the 1004 will do just fine. They'll be plenty loud, trust me. You probably won't even have to turn the amp up much to keep your ears from bleeding, depending on the sensitivity of the speaker.

Right now I have the 300/2 powering the one set of components (only 150 watts for both components). At 75 watts, the speakers don't sound that much louder (to me atleast) than some stock speakers. ..

please allow me to correct you.

the general rule of thumb is that you actually want to have an amp that puts out MORE RMS power than the speaker is rated for.. i personally try to do 20% more power for all the customers that come through my store. reason is so that when your amp is capable of putting out more power than the speaker needs.. you can actually adjust the gain down a little bit to keep the amp running cool and clean.

you see if you have a small amp that you are constantly running 100% power all the time then you will see the amp and the speakers fail. what happens is that the amp has to work so hard it heats up quickly and also distorts at lower listening volumes.
most people i see that come in with blown subs or speakers is NOT becuase they overpowered them.. but becuase they send underpowered distorted signals to them which will in turn heat up the voice coil and after time (sometimes just a few minutes) cause the coil to fuse together ruining the sub.

something to read.. i kinda contradicts what i say a little bit BUT i dont have time to explain it all
