How many of you guys use radar detectors?
How many of you guys use radar detectors?
I was just wondering how many of you use radar detectors and if they seem to work. My dad has went through tons of them upgrading depending on the cops' new arsenal. He now has a voice laser detector.
He gave me his old one and told me to use it if im gonna speed. The clip was broken and i already fixed it. I dunno but for some reason i dont like using it. It seems like my cars gonna get broken into with it, it will attract more police attention, and i dont know why but im paranoid about those things giving off bad radiation for some reason.
Just curious how many of you guys use them and if they have saved you from tickets. My dad swears by them yet he has tons of speeding tickets (No accidents thankfully). The one i got is pretty much the same thing as my dads current one without the voice. I usually dont speed more than 10 over and cops in my area dont even seem to care.

Re: How many of you guys use radar detectors?
i use one. I don't know why i didn't buy one the 2nd i got my car. It has saved me alot of times. Should of bought one after my 1st ticket or the 2nd.. or..
Re: How many of you guys use radar detectors?
I've used one for the past 5 years, or so, and I really can't think of a situation where it has saved me. Haven't received any tickets, either, BTW.
I actually find myself nowadays not even plugging it in every time. My driving habits have changed quite a lot in the last years, too.
I did have a V1 for a few months (bought it from a friend only because I knew I would be able to make 100 bucks when I sold it), and while it was a lot more accurate than any of the detectors I had used earlier, it wasn't worth the money to me, so I sold it and made a few bucks.
As long as you realize that they are not 100% fool-proo and you won't think that you are invincible with it, they are somewhat useful.
Hmmm...
Did that make any sense...?

Both my and my GF have V1's installed in our summer cars with the remote display's so the unit itself it hidden from view. IMO the only 2 radar detectors that are worth it are the V1 and the Escort 8500; the cost the most, but are the most accurate and don't give you the false-readings anywhere's near as much as a $100 unit. I don't run one in my hooptie though; even though I could very easially remove the main unit and put it in my car, I don't speed in the hooptie like I do in the Bird; 10-15 over at the most, and around here, cops don't even look at you if you aren't doing mroe than 15 over.
Re: How many of you guys use radar detectors?
they are only good for lazy cops who have it on constantly...they are no good for lasers and "instant on" radars that the staties use.
it has saved me several times from the lazy cop and from the photo-cops

Re: How many of you guys use radar detectors?
well at first i was a skeptic. Then I figured, well might as well give it a shot, cuz i could get a sick deal on the x50, so i went ahead and got an x50 blue. First few times i used it, lots of false signals, and it didnt pick up a cop facing the other direction until i was less than 50 yards behind him, oh well he couldnt have measured my speed then anyways. Well driving back from college the other day. Almost home. Familiar road that I know the State Troopers like to hide on. About 30 minutes from home I'm going around a highway corner, alone. All cars about quarter mile behind me. All the sudden Ka.......beep....beep beep......beep beep beep........increasing in tone slightly, still not near full alert though. Having done my research I know that Ka is a pretty darn good indicator of police radar. So I hit the brakes, unplug the detector, pull it off my custom dash mount, and double check my speed (65mph). Sure enough right around the corner was a state trooper, perched up in the medion on a hill, at an angle, so he couldnt be seen, his radar was not projected down the road. Very clever if I do say so myself. Anyways between my first beep, and the time I saw the cop it was maybe 10-15 seconds, never the less I was saved, and a beleiver. That situation alone covered what I payed for the detector, in what would have been ticket cost, court fees, and legal problems. No i wasn't going wreckless, just a little bit over on a huge highway in the country. While some states, cough cough, VA make radar detectors illegal, I figure I support the State Police with donations every year, hoping my money will go to fighting real crime. I'm tired of being a victimized law abiding citizen who drives a little faster than a speed limit that was created to be too low in order to generate revenue. Friend of mine had a 2000 SS. Loved the car to death, and babied it, literally. He was dying of cancer and that was his dream car. Well some jerk keyed it, when his brother called the police, they said hey private property, not my problem. People have been mugged, robbed, and held at gunpoint in my neighborhood, which is a very nice one. Yet the police have done nothing. Basically you are more likely these days to get away with theft, or murder, than speeding, and that is the truth. What is our law enforcement coming to? To the police who dedicate their lives to true justice, I apologize for offending you, and praise your selfless tribute to your people and country, and keep it up! But to the all to common "business cops" looking for money for law abiding citizens, well, my radar detector is just the best I can do to fight back.
