Help deciding on new system please

I'll admit right away that I don't know much about car audio equipment.

I don't really know what is good and what to stay away from.
I'm looking for some great bang for the buck stuff.

I've got a 100% stock stereo in my Zed.

I want a new better sounding system.
I'm not looking to over the top. All I intend on doing is getting a new deck (mainly because I want to be able to play my ipod through it) and possibly a whole set of new speakers if you think it's necessary.

How good are my stock speakers? One of them has a a nasty buzz when I turn up the volume but other than that, they seem to be ok for my stock deck.

Help out a guy who is clueless please!

Keep in mind the stock radio is a 1.5 din size. What you will most likely end up with is a din size head unit. Which means an installation kit and wiring harness, and antenna adapter. Some of the top aftermarket brands are Alpine, JVC, Pioneer, Kenwood, Eclipse, and Clarion. Some may disagree. I'd look around Crutchfield and other sites such as Onlinecarstereo, and maybe Ikesound.

I'd look into Pioneer or Alpine head units mainly for your application - they have a few with good built-in iPod controls. Though most HUs can be adapted for iPod use, the equipment will cost you extra (depending on the level of control you want from the HU).

Which speaker is giving you the annoying sound? Speakers for factory system aren't the worst sounding -- they're just made of poor materials and fall apart over time, and don't sound very good from the stock Delco unit at higher volumes due to distortion produced.

i run a alpine head unit, with ipod connector, took a while to get used to how to use the ipod on the hu, but once you do, its pretty nice. then i replaced al my speakers with alpine also... type s's uop front and r's in the rear, it gives a good balance because the r's hit a lil harder on the base, but if you turn the s's up too loud they tend to get distorted, so i turn it to about 5 towards the rear and it sounds perfect at about 20 volume(average daily drivign volume is 15 on my hu.) i got all this for about... $350... and installed everything myself, except the hu, figure another 80 or so to get that done. hope this helps
