Chances are that your gain levels are not set properly. This results in a badly clipped signal from the amp going to your speakers. When this happens the tweeter protector in the speaker's crossover opens and shuts off the tweeter. When you back off the volume a little it allows the protector time to cool off and close again allowing the signal to get to the tweeter again. IMO these things are useless. Over time they can begin to fail and open even when they shouldn't.

The first thing to do is get your gain levels set properly. The only way to do that is with either test equipment or someone with a trained ear and a calibrated test disc like the Auto Sound 2000 CD104. Highly recommended!

Once you've done that I would recommend removiung the tweeter protector from the crossovers. It looks like a little ceramic disc capacitor. You can either do what I do and remove it from the circuit board and replace it with a jumper OR if the leads are long enough just grab it and twist it so that the leads touch each other and short the tweeter protector out of the circuit.

I've done this for years and have never had any problems from blowing the tweeters afterwards. But remember that's beacuse I have the rest of my system setup properly using an O-scope. But even then your ears should be able to tell you that the sound is distorting badly long before the tweeter blows.
