CD Deck Randomly Shuts Off
CD Deck Randomly Shuts Off
I've got a Clarion CD player I bought back in 1999, can't remember the model number, but just today it started to randomly shut off and on while I'm driving. It's not as if it's a lose power connection or anything, because even after it shuts off I can still eject CD's. Although normally when my deck is often it will still display the clock, but not anymore. My deck also still displays "Good Bye" when it shuts off, so it's planning to shut off
? Then it will randomly come back on and even say "Welcome". The only thing I can think of is maybe the deck is overheating and it's a protection thing that it shuts off. Any ideas?

Re: CD Deck Randomly Shuts Off
the only possibillities that i can think of is that you could have a bad ground.
the ground wire in the harness might be cut or crushed. some people will say that you will lose all memory if that happens, but that is not true. when the ground wire in the harness is not making a good connection, the radio often pulls ground from the antenna connection. This will play still but often cause the radio to shut off at high volumes or high bass notes. also, if the radio has a detatchable faceplate, i have seen the connections get loose or corroded. when the radio is on, wiggle the faceplate and see if the same prob occurs. finally, check the impedance of the speakers in the car. a blown speaker can cause a short. the factory non-monsoon speakers should all read 4ohms, and monsoon speakers systems should read 2ohms per spkr. if you have recently hooked up any after maket speakers to a non monsoon system, wireing them to a 2ohm or less impedence can cause the radio to clip like that.
hope this helps!

Re: CD Deck Randomly Shuts Off
Thanks for the reply. I'll check out the ground this weekend. I haven't changed anything related to my stereo since I've owned my car (~6 years), the problem just started a week ago. I did notice today when the deck shut off it was extremely hot behind the faceplate, I couldn't hold my finger there longer than a couple of seconds.
Re: CD Deck Randomly Shuts Off
This used to happen to my old Clarion in my '88 Celebrity. Usually when I stepped on the brake pedal, the friggin CD player would shut off.
Annoying as all hell, let me tell you. It ended up being a connection problem with the ground or wires, or something.
