Car subs for home use?
Yeah I know it is not the smartest move but I just don't have the money for home audio like I used to. I will be getting my license soon and between paying insurance and paying gas money for a suped up V8 I will not have much money left. Well, my home sub died on me and now it is useless so I need some more low end. My Onkyo puts out nice power but I need just a little more low end sound. Well my car came with subs and I was thinking maybe I could take them out of my car and stick them in my room and use a 250 watt plate from parts express to power them.Plate amp.
Of course this would be only a temporary fix until I was able to get enough money to do my Tempest project. Well, anyway the subs in my car are a pair of JL Audio 10-W0-8 JL subwoofers I own. (an 10 inch sub with an 8 ohm voice coil). The subs are no that bad, they do what they can. Plus their in a seal box so that help keep the boomyness down.

It depends on the sub, but a JL should work well in a home enclosure. Typically a car audio driver tends to work best in a ported enclosure when used in a home application. Most car audio drivers seem to have a smooth rolloff that starts at a higher frequency. It's good for a car because when it's combined with the vehicle's transfer function, it gives a smoother response, but in the home, it winds up being a little thin sounding. By going with the right ported enclosure, you can get some of the lower octave information back. Your best bet is to contact JL and see what size/style box they reccomend for their subs in a home situation.
Parts Express sells a 100 watt home sub for about the same price as the plate amp. That may be the better way to go.
The speaker blew out in my home sub, and I replaced it with a Polk car sub speaker. Sounded better than the speaker that was in it. Yep, the box is ported. Guy at the car audio store tried to tell me it wouldn't work.

I have my 2 12's hooked up in my house with my kenwood amp. I just rewired the powerunit from an old computer to power the amp. Here is a link to the thread that taught me how to do it http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...threadid=52257 Hope this helps!
